One number will hang over a congressional hearing Wednesday looking into mismanagement at a U.S. Veterans Affairs regional office in Oakland, Calif.: 13,184.
That’s the number of compensation and disability claims that were found in 2012, wrongfully stashed in a filing cabinet — some dating to the mid-1990s and many unprocessed.

I know I had to file a couple of times when I was retiring..."Sorry, we do not even have you in the system?"...and I hope those 13,184 did the same but I am sure there were some that were just waiting for the VA to do something.

And this blows my mind...
In this day and age why does it take forever for records to move .. if at all.
I had the NRPC do a complete record dump on me .. Form 20, Medical Records .. everything. It took about 3 months but the fat envelope arrive and WTF .. no a page of the extensive medical records (Vietnam TBI). If there had not been "patent" details on the Form 20 you would never know I was wounded.

I would love to share my story someday...but not on a public forum...to protect others.

UGH, and the VA hits keep rolling in. When will they remove their heads from their rear ends and treat our vets with the respect and honor they deserve? This angers and saddens me greatly!

I understand both your anger and sadness.
I am still not convinced that the VA had enough $$ from the beginning to do the job.

Is there a solution? It seems like they keep shuffling personnel and management around, but are they really addressing the actual issues?

All I know for sure is that Veterans have been complaining about post war treatment since the Roman Empire.

Don't get me wrong .. a VA Admin probably saved my life back in '70 by getting a case of pleurisy admitted as a "rule out Maleria".
I can't figure out how something that sized functions at all let alone function flawlessly.

There's no reason why the VA can operate efficiently (effectively is another thing entirely). This is an administrative error that should never have occurred. But having seen myself the air of apathy and discontent among VA workers, i'm not surprised this happened. I'm surprised it's news worthy, as i suspect there are more forgotten files everywhere.
