Any 88L watercraft engineers here? I’m thinking about reclassing and wanted to know what to expect day to day. Anything you think I should know before trying to switch over? I’m currently a 15R Apache mechanic.

Promotions as well are slim. If you want to play on The water join the navy, or coast guard.

88L here, SGT. I can only speak from my experience in Hawaii. When you're not sailing, most of your time will be spent PMCSing, which I'm sure you're used to. You'll get to learn everything about how to keep that boat running. Day to day operations can get monotonous. Sailing is the best part. There are a lot of inner island runs, mostly to transport equipment for 25th ID or the Marine Corps to the Big Island. If you're lucky you'll get small missions to Maui or Kauai and they'll let you spend a few days exploring. I could honestly talk all day about sailing. I absolutely love it. If you have any specific questions I'd be happy to answer them.

Is it true the only two active duty stations are ft eustis, VA and Hawaii? And would I be able to still deploy? Or what is considered a deployment for this MOS?

SGT (Join to see) Correct, Ft. Eustis and Hawaii are the only two stations available to us. As far as "deployment" the only place I've heard of us going is Kuwait for 6 months, but I believe the rotation that just came back recently was the last one to go. Other than that our field doesn't have any deployments, just missions.

Do you get to do a lot of actual repairs? I'm thinking of inquiring for a slot to try to re-class to this come October.

Yes, don’t hold out hope for that MOS. It’s a very tiny MOS and there are never any class seats open for reclass.

It’s under strength right now, hopes aren’t too high but we will see.

SGT (Join to see) strengths don’t have anything to do with class seats. Many jobs stay under strength because there are no class seats. I can tell you that right now there are 0 open class seats from now to the end of September 2021 for that MOS right now
