Any advice for someone who is looking to join the Navy, like what should I know before I go in and what to work on before then?

Honestly i would start studying and learn the 11 general orders of a sentry. The navy is more than a job it is its very own culture Steeped in traditions. The more you know about the navy and its customs the better off you will be. Learn the navy's ranks and how to address non commissioned officers as well as commissioned ones. Understand that once your at RTC Great Lakes your mom will not be there with you. Listen carefully to all instructions and perform what is asked of you. In the submarine service we repeat back every command or instruction followed by AYE AYE Petty Officer/Chief/Sir. Prepare to have your butt kicked on a daily basis the first 6-8 weeks.

Good luck to you. Naval service will very likely be the most challenging/satisfying time of your life. You'll learn more about yourself during this time than you can even imagine. You'll find yourself doing things for your shipmates that you wouldn't even do for your family. Look after your team, protect them, have their back no matter what. Don't be afraid to ask for help. Most of all conduct yourself with honor. Stay true to your word and listen to your nco's. If your always honest up front they'll look after you.

when you DEP in you will get a “start” guide study it and take it serious, it’s much harder to learn all of the things necessary for boot camp while already in boot camp. If i could go back I would have taken that time before I shipped to study more and educate myself. Cardio is also a huge thing, you will have to pass a baseline PRT (just the run portion) your first week there. Military bearing is another thing Work on it as much as possible.
