I'm starting an architecture firm and starting the process of getting certified to have a competitive edge in getting design and construction government jobs (city and state level). Any advice from veterans in the architecture/engineering/construction field who have been granted government projects?

Have you gone through the requisite SAM and SBA classification processes.
You will probably be best served as a sub-contractor initially until your SOQ is more fully developed to go after jobs as a Prime Contractor.

I have started working on that through the help of local SBDC. They have been very helpful with their classes and communicating with their representative. I was looking to see advice from veterans because I have not been able to personally talk to someone there who is very knowledgeable of certification through the VA, and I have never talked to a veteran who has gone through the process either who might be able to guide me based on their experience.
Thank you for the advice on being a sub first. I'll see if I can link up with an engineering firm or GC who has experience with government work and perhaps they can bring us into their team. Thank you for sharing your contact and assistance. Much appreciated!

I have a friend, a former engineer and civil affairs SNCO who started a realtor company and now is getting into the construction side as well. I can link you with him via linkedin if you'd like. PM if you're interested (I'm not sure how he feels about putting his name out in the open without permission).
