Any weather observers still around?

This skillset was once a major portion of weather observations but now we have gone to Automated Weather Sites. I was an observer and an experienced one and I find the loss of the specialty as especially alarming. Most notably with Sky Condition and sector visibility.

What are your memories of observing and were you one? Did you realize it used to be two separate career paths. We had observers with advance science degrees.
