This has always been a pet peeve of mine.  We form up in full Winter APFUs because it's friggin cold outside, and the 1SG tells us to take our pants off. WHY? It's COLD!

Am I the only person in the military who gets cold when my legs are exposed to cold air and wind? We usually just stand there waiting for who knows what to start the formation usually after it was supposed to begin. I once had to take an APFT at Ft. Huachuca while it was 30° with a really cold wind. We had to take off our pants for that one. Too cold. Way too cold. Am I just bitching? Is this because I am a Floridian?

All I really want to know is why do senior NCOs make this call? Can't we take the pants off when we actually start PT?

Ok so you are Chief and you let 1SG tell you that you have to take your pant off?

Ok Gunner SGT. first sergeant never run pt I know because I've sat in that seat. And he don't tell the Warrants what to do. If the Co put out directions for pt WHICH THEY NEVER DO, he would let us know first.

Never say never. During BN runs, our 1SG always dictated the uniform and led the formation. I can't imagine it would be very professional to watch your Soldiers strip down to shorts while you, the Officers, stand in the back, nice and warm in their pants. It's not about who out ranks who. It's about unity of the formation and leading from the front (in regards to why a warrant would listen to a 1SG).

Because a 1SG runs PT formation (Training). I don't get why warrants really think they have so much power, especially over the 1SG. Go stand outside the company, look at the sign in front, who's name is on there? The CO and 1SG. Just fall in and nod your head north and south, you don't want to get in a pissing match with them.

Last I knew, the 1SG developed the training plan and that little CPT you report to Chief, signed it off. Professionalism of some WO's used to crack me up at times having grown up the dependent of a highly professional one, and then seeing as a troop myself. You gave up the stripes to become a WO. Didn't mean you had to give up being a troop. Does a WO have to be at PT, nope, only if his leadership is... However that said, the formation is being run by the 1SG for the CO. If the CO doesn't require his staff, or other officers attendance, because as Officers they are expected to be set for the PT test, then so be it. But seeing that WO in the back of the formation shows that the WO is not above being a soldier. Being Senior to the 1SG, I always heard our 1SG dismiss those WO's in attendance if they chose, but they were always welcome. Mind you, few WO ever showed or even stayed. But when they did, it was true teamwork, leadership and outstanding selfless service for his team to see him/her working out and maintaining the PT standards. Besides, who used to give you that PT test - damn sure wasn't that CO. It was that 1SG in a properly run company! To the SFC, will a 1SG ever tell a WO they have to do something in public - probably not. But they'd prolly have a meeting behind closed doors, and I guarantee there will be a mutual understanding. If any of you have ever seen "We Were Soldiers", remember the part where Mel Gibson told his staff that the SGM only answered to him and him alone - well, a good CO would probably ensure his officers were well aware of that one and the WO's respected it! WO are above a 1SG in both grade and rank, but there is damn sure some respect among one another for it is the 1SG's company and that CO had better back that ass up!!!

I'm a Marine and it baffles me when it's 10 degrees out and a -2 degree wind chill and they still make us Pt. Yeah know we need to get used to cold weather, but come on.

Well at some duty stationed you still had to do PT until it was -20 not including the wind chill factor! The military mindset is pretty stupid at times! Just saying!

So during PT you would rather overheat? It got damn warm on our 3-5 mile runs.

I agree, Chief Kantor! Lots of stupid, counter productive stuff going on in the military. Perhaps, the only answer to your question is, “Because they can”.

Your point is well taken. Unfortunately, the Army is a conformist culture so if one takes them off you all have to take them off.

There is a physiological reason that the Navy takes advantage of when they had us sit in the 56-degree surf at Coronado. Exposure to cold like that causes your body to transform yellow or white fat into something different called brown fat. So what? Well yellow or white fat is just a large cell filled with lipids. It can be converted into energy but doing so is one of your bodies last resorts. Brown fat contains some lipids but also has mitochondria Which are the little engines in our bodies that actually create energy..... they burn the other fat! Once you have made enough brown fat your body stays warmer and you get to lose weight because of the energy being used by, not only your muscles but also brown fat. Yes, it's an uncomfortable process...... so is not being in the proper condition to withstand day after day of prolonged combat.

I went to basic in Missouri in the winter and I did not mind running in shorts and a t-shirt - it gave me a reason to keep running - 1 it the more I ran - the warmer I was and 2 the faster I ran the faster I got back inside where it was warm. All this helped me get better on my run which was my worst area on the APFT.
