Not 'optional', the bow tie is worn in the dress configuration.

Are you asking because you :
1. Don't have one?
2. Don't know how to tie one?
or
3. Dont want to wear one?

If you intend on moving up in the military, you will be very likely wearing one again. NCOES class led formal dinners, dining in/outs. Really any military occasion that is the equivalent to a tux. You should just learn how to wear one. They are inexpensive.

Honestly, SFC. I was really just curious about it. I have a bow tie, and I have worn it to special events. I didn’t know if it was optional or not.
