I'll be in the secondary zone for SSG in June. Since I've only been a SGT for less then a year, I don't have any NCOER's. I'm being told you have to have NCOERs for promotion to SSG, but can't find anything stating that. And advice is appreciated.

How are you going to be in your secondary zone if you literally just promoted to SGT? Do you have 42 months TIS? You don’t need an NCOER, but you do require a waiver. Why are you so eager to promote to SSG if you just became a SGT? Learn how to be a leader before you go on to be a SSG who doesn’t know what to do

SSG (Join to see) - Sorry about the reservist comment, its natural for AC and Reserves to go at it though. Friendly banter.

I believe that if you don't know the regs on getting promoted you are not ready to be promoted. Instead of going on like and asking questions use your chain of command. Ask your Personnel Actions Clerk or a trusted Senior NCO. Then come back and ask questions on a web site. You can go on line and get all of the regs about promotions and read them. The answers are there and it will make you a better NCO after you read and understand them.

I do not see how they could otherwise rate your performance as an NCO, and readiness for the next grade. While I am not sure, it would not make sense. Sorry for the hypothetical, but this does not seem right.

Point well stated.
His Leadership Is Failing Him if he doesnt have any NCOERS or documented progression as an NCO.

Part of the promotion packet that you fill out, if you have any, you are to include (at a min) the last 5 NCOERs. If you don't have any, then you need to include an MFR stating why there are no NCOERs in your promo packet. On the US Army Reserve Promotion Packet Composition , Elections and Preferences Checklist, Section B 3.E is where you will see that.

Are NCOERs required for promotion to SSG?

They’re not required. We’ve had people in our unit get their first NCOER as a SSG.

I was told that when I was in the service, that you had to have a good NCOER report to be promoted plus the points that were needed also.

You Are Overdue, an Initial NCOER and should be receiving Quarterly NCOERs. Contact All your First Line Supervisors past and present during your rank of E5 and ask them for your Missing NCOERs.

How did you get to SSG thinking something ridiculous like this? NCOER SUPPORT form maybe, also seen as quarterly counseling.

NCOERS are not a requirement for a board appearance or promotion to SSG.

I’ll say it should be. I didn’t go to the board until 6 months after my 1/1 block was signed because of an incident from 2 years prior. Apparently, the regs only matter if someone dislikes you immensely.

I have no idea how the reserves work. For my education, do you go to promotion boards like the active duty? is it more like our E-7- E-9 boards where you have a packet and all of your Awards, NCOER's, etc etc are looked at by some CSM/SGM's? If its like our E7 E-9 boards, what do they have to look at you to base an opinion of whether or not you should be promoted. I know i wouldn't even look at your packet if that was the case. If its like our E5-E6 boards, you would be recommended by your NCO's to appear before the board anyway, no NCOER's required but would be helpful. I'm just trying to learn here. But if you've just been promoted to E5, i find it hard to believe your ready to be an E6 already, no matter how highly you think of yourself. Nothing worse than thinking your ready when your not and finding out later. Good luck to you either way.

SSG (Join to see) - Thank you for the clarification. I just wasnt sure how that worked on the reserves side of the house. Then i stand by my original comment. Im not sure what the board would see to base their decision on if you do not have any NCOER's in your packet.
