I enjoy sports. But when I tell folks I enjoy watching NASCAR and following the exploits of my favorite Stewart-Haas drivers, I'm often laughed at and told, "Racing cars isn't a real sport because it doesn't involve a ball or a puck." And "drivers are not athletes." I beg to differ. Many (but not all) of today's drivers train and diet as an athlete to stay mentally sharp and physically fit for the conditions of driving a car at nearly 200 mph and often intenionally bumping another car into the wall - or hitting the wall themselves. What say you, Bubba?

Whether it is the NASCAR Whelen series or CUP.Try to concentrate for 4 plus hour at temp approaching
150 degrees noise levels at 120 db & much higher.Plus the mechanical work, repairs & season long grind of 15 to 38 weeks length, baseball doesn't last that long.

I'm slightly amused by these responses. Questions I will pose:

1. Is everyone that has a workout program at the gym an athlete?

2. Are truck drivers athletes based on hours in the seat and miles driven?

Just because they drive really fast for a couple of hours doesn't make them an athlete. I would actually be more inclined to give the pit crew "athlete" status based on what they do during pit stops, but the sad truth is, the car is doing most of the work, not the person in it.

***side note for the heat and weight loss drivers experience--put any fat guy in a sauna for 5 hours and he will lose a lot of water weight.... what NASCAR drivers do is not easy or pleasant, but let's not give them a status based on enduring hardship...

I have followed NASCAR for Yrs, even was able to work with a few crews at California Speedway, and I say yes they are! It takes someone in great physical shape to do what they do week in and week out for the long season they have.

@CH (CPT) William Beaver I am with you I enjoy NASCAR a lot and if you ever watch the personal interviews they do with the drivers you will really hear how hard some of them work out. They do a lot more then people can imagine and there is a lot of force with in that car even with out hitting anything. In my book they are athletes>>>...
