Yesterday I saw a Brigadier General wearing what I'm assuming was Army class B uniform, but he had no ribbons and only a name tag and a small badge or unit icon above the name tag. I could not make it out very well. Is this something that is standard practice or optional? Please help feed my curiosity.

Optional. The “Icon” above his name tag is his regimental distinctive insignia RDI. The requirement on class B is rank and name tag. You have the option of wearing badges and/or your top three awards. Most just wear name plate, RDI and rank

We have another uniform in the ASU family called Class A Tropical. That’s the SS shirt with full ribbons and badges.

Okay, I'm going to piggy back on this thread, and hopefully a squared away Sergeant can provide me some insight and edification.

Q. Can a Commander direct those in their charge to wear any patch or scroll that the Commander had made for the identification of the unit or a special skill?

If you are talking about SSI-FWTS aka "Combat Patches" then the answer is "NO" they cannot. Combat patches are at the wearer's discretion, so long as the particular patch was earned and authorized during the period of deployment. DA Pam 670-1 spells this out pretty clearly.
Ch. 21-17 (2)c (p. 207)
"c. Soldiers who are authorized to wear more than one SSI–FWTS have the option of choosing which SSI–FWTS they will wear. Soldiers may also elect not to wear a SSI–FWTS."

It is simply necessary to wear all authorized decorations and awards for your DA photo. It is entirely optional to wear any of your accolades, CL A or B, at any other time.

Optional to wear some, none or all, unless dictated otherwise by local or higher authority.

There is no regulation that requires soldiers to wear all of their awards. They are required, however, for official photographs.

The general probably felt that his stars were enough to establish his credibility - and he was right.
