I am an Assistant ScoutMaster for a Boyscout Troop in Kansas. Have been working with scouting for several years and really enjoy mentoring and having an impact with the Scouts. My son will start his Eagle project this year (sometime...) and is something that I look forward to.

I have nearly 25 years of volunteer service to the comunity. I have served as a Scouter for almost 10 years. I have been appointed to boards and commissions, and been a member of service organizations.
It has been like another career; both one I love doing and adds to my overall experience.

One of the fastest growing trends among Veterans is the raise in volunteer hours given to different organizations from the veteran. Personally I volunteer with several groups and organizations and I have found it to be a great way to continue helping out.
Congrats to your son on the start of his Eagle Scout project. That young man has a long road in front of him but I'm sure he'll do a great job.

Scouting has been greatly helpful in focusing the lives of many, to include all 3 of my children (we are a scouting family). Thanks for the sentiments, they're appreciated!

I used to spend every other Thursday afternoon helping with the Food Pantry for AMVETS. I have also done the typical Habitat for Humanity, Special Olympics, etc event volunteer work.
I am hoping to find something new that I can sink my teeth into. WWP is very active here, so I have thought about that. I have also thought about working iwth local JROTC.

You bring up a good question! Let me give you some ammunition to try to bring on more volunteers. With the OPTEMPO finally slowing after a decade, our service members will now have more time available to them. In addition to having more time, volunteering within the community is an excellent way to separate yourself from the heard and gain some valuable experience (personal and professional) at the same time; not to mention that volunteering for these worthwhile organizations is excellent public service and reflects positively on your local installation and unit. Those looking to do good in their community, it's time to get involved!

Oh yeah, the Boys and Girls Club of America has been a popular one for me in the past, especially around the holidays when they give presents to the children. It's also been rewarding to volunteer at places that serve meals for veterans. Just be careful wearing a uniform because you'll hear HOURS of stories from these vets!!

I can relate! Our Chartered organization is the local American Legion post. Not only am I polite enough to sit through "when I was...back in 65'..." but I get asked a lot about today's military and deployments. Thanks for sharing!

Oh yeah, a lot of Soldiers have no idea about hanging out at the American Legion post! You'll usually get some free drinks and get a lot of great stories. Those guys are appreciative just for you to come by, they love to hear about how things are just as much as they love to talk about how it used to me. They also do a lot of voluteer events in the community and would love to have some help, so that creates more opportunities for your Soldiers. I love the American Legions!

So do I, I encourage people to go by and see what they are about. I deployed to Djibouti, Africa not too long ago and the Commander of the American Legion was here back in the 90's...I felt like I knew this place before I ever got here after hours of "back when I was there". Funny thing is, that's gonna be us one day!

We will be doing a talent show for ALS this year. My supervisor in the Air Force died with complications and since veterans have a higher rate of ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) than civilians, it is a worthwhile cause. I also have done blood drivers complete with race cars and drivers at Hooters. Helping others should be priority one in our lives. Our family and spirituality and making sure we ARE OUR BROTHER'S KEEPER. Because except by the grace of God, go I.
