Are veterans causing a rift in civlian-military relations? Does serving entitle veterans to special treatment?

I don't mind getting thanks or getting discounts. However, I will act gentlemanly if told no. Our military and the families have sacrificed a lot in the endeavor to give us independence, maintain the union, fight against tyranny twice in Europe, fight dictators, communism, and terrorism. Ultimately, we and our families are the bill payers for wars. If they want them to recognize the military, so be it.
