Do people no longer read their counseling forms anymore? Do people NOT go to their NCOs anymore? Or, is this a case of "I was told one thing, but I didn't like what I heard so I decided to go onto social media and search for an answer that better suits my way of thinking and feeling?"

MSG (Join to see) My thought exactly when I see questions like these. Where is the CoC? Heaven forbid I see one of my Sailors post a question like this.

Yes. When you were read your counseling informing you of a flagging action being placed on your records you were or should have been told that no favorable actions could take place while you are flagged. This includes if you are aSPC promotable you will be reboarded.

AR 600-8-2. J is for weight control and A is for adverse action? If you are flagged, that spends ALL favorable action. Promotion is favorable action. Review chapter 3.

The flag is there until it is lifted by completion of punishment for the A and successful completion of ABCP standards for the J.

The second letter isn't a separate flag, it's the status of the flag. In this case the A means that the flag is active. For instance, when a weight control flag is lifted it goes from a BA to a BE.

SFC (Join to see) - thank you. Initial info was vague. I was thinking about multiple flags

Are you barred from promotion to SPC if you have a JA PT flag?

Absolutely--if you cannot meet a standard (in this case passing the APFT), you do not advance to a higher rank; but I'm sure you were counseled on this like MSG (Join to see) mentioned.

Yes. Suspension of favorable actions. Good news for you is between putting away the twinkies and hitting the gym, you can research the AR and prepare yourself for the board... once you make it there

You can not be promoted if you are flagged. You can however be demoted.

the answer is yes, you lose your "P" status, you busted tape, and the flag is active. that is what the "J" and the "A" signify. When you failed the tape test. you should have been counseled regarding the overweight program, the flag, and repercussions of the flag.
