I am not well versed in the Army promotion board so I don't know how much this may help. With that said, have you looked in to the Senior Enlisted Joint PME course? It is available for E-6 and above.

There are 3 academic requirements, patrols, peers and spots. If you fail one catagory you will be recycled. If you fail the same catagory you will be recommended for drop. However, the Bde commander will more than likely offer what is called a day one, meaning you start all over. This was the case for the three females. The day one option is given to pretty much everyone, very few accept it.

I've seen plenty of staff sergeants with drill sergeant badges on their chest wait a very long time to make E7
