In all seriousness, the quickest way to enhance your career is to go to a SOF unit hands down! In SOF there is a 96% first look pick up rate for E7 and the average age of A SOF E7 is 28 to 31, and 31 to 33 for first sergeants!

You can't, you'd have to be in either SF, Ranger regiment or another USASOC Unit to know that. It's a survey that SOF units do in order to keep tabs on their promotion rates. I spent 8 years in Ranger regiment as a cook and I watched most 11Bs get their 7 in seven. One of my superiors made SGM in 14, and that was as a cook, he also had an impressive file and outstanding record.

Try looking into Battle Staff or becoming an instructor. The Army Basic Instructor Course(ABIC) is a great course to take as a path into instructing.

SSG Harris,

Two most important ranks in the Army: SSG and LT. There will be people who disagree with this assessment, but those are the people on the ground making the important decisions that accomplish missions and tasks. Your profile indicate you just made Staff. Career progression is great, but in the end memories are priceless. My best peace time military memories are from the days I spent as a howitzer section chief. Being an arty PSG was fun, but running a gun line was nothing like running a gun. I probably had a bigger impact on the Army overall as Smoke, but no where near as much fun.

Use your time as a Staff Sergeant to hone both your professional MOS skills and your leadership skills. Coach and mentor your Soldiers. Seek opportunities to mentor other Soldiers and leaders. Become a go-to person. Nothing better than asking an OC during lanes training a question they cannot find it a book. Become that person.

Last summer I had the opportunity to supervise a white cell for a large field artillery exercise. One day I decided to visit one of the motor pools of a unit I work with in the past hoping to run into some people I knew. I didn't, but I did have the chance to look over the Army's latest towed 155. I had never seen one up close and knew little about them so I was full of questions. I asked the young gunner some questions. Like I said I knew nothing about this particular weapon system, but I know artillery. He tried to blow smoke but my follow up questions in arty jargon blew the smoke back at him (he really should have paid attention as I was wearing the BDE's patch on my right arm that day). Before long one of the young Specialist saved him.

Nothing will improve your chances of promotion like being good at what you do and being smart about your job. People will notice your smarts and skills. People will take about you in front of senior NCOs and Officers. They will help spread the news you are a top notch person. That takes time. You don't get to play Carnegie Hall after playing the trombone for a week!

College good? Are you got a master degree, or working in your doctorate. Also look for be a Sharp, EO, rep. Any army course you can enroll that work 40 hours or more you need to get enrolled in one once a year at least. To shown your interest in military progression and understanding

My recommendation is to look at professional development courses outside your primary MOS. Right now I am working in a MOS immaterial position as an NCOES Instructor and really enjoy what I am doing. If you can get courses/training under your belt that show that you are versitile and well rounded it will allow you to position yourself down the road for the "interesting" assignments when they come looking at experience.

SSG (Join to see), have you taken a DAU courses? If you are looking for some good management type courses, then look into Program Management and Lean Six Sigma. Those two certs are money makers for the Military and for the civilian world.
