When it comes to the aviation field, which one has the upper hand? From what I can tell the national guard has a lot more aviation units, but the reserve units are a lot bigger? Does anyone have experience with either? Pros and cons? Just any differences in general?

Army National Guard has a lot of aviation assets and they tend to get used a lot. Depends on the state, what state are looking to join?

Ohio. They have 3 detachments, 1 Blackhawk, 1 Lakota, and 1 Chinook. They're all about an hour away from me.
The closest reserve aviation base to me is the 11th aviation command in fort Knox, 4 hours away. I'm trying figure out if the Reserves is worth the extra 3 hours of driving each month.

(Join to see) - The Army Reserve has a bigger pool for promotion in the long run, but in units like Infantry or Aviation, you won't hit that wall until you are a Chief Warrant Officer 3 or a Captain. Not my side of the fence, most of my helicopter time was sitting in the door with a pack and a rifle between my knees, but most of the pilots tell me that if flying is your goal, Warrant Officer is the way to go. Everyone acts like it is a huge ordeal to switch over to the Reserve, and it's not, especially after you have served your initial enlistment. Everyone that pays for your training will want their money's worth before they release you.
My understanding that there is now a program that will allow you to enlist, do BCT, then go directly to WOCS, then to Flight School. I believe the requirements are the same for those going in from Active Duty, so there is a big requirement list. Good luck if you decide to go for it.

The Reserves only just got aviation back a few years ago I think. The units are few and far between.

Most, if not all states, have at least a company sized aviation element in their National Guard.
