As a leader, do you cross-reference other branches manuals?

I have found great interest in reading the Army Leadership & Marine Leadership manuals, as well as field tactic manuals. Part of this comes from the AFSC I was in & always thought it would be a good idea to integrate the skills that the other branches that have been doing field stuff for much longer use.

It helps to know the regulations of other branches, especially if you work in a ''joint'' environment. For example, I didn't know that the Navy had more relaxed standards when it came to mustache length and shaping. Sailors can have a much more realistic looking mustache than the ''Hitler'' style mustaches that we're only able to grow in the Army.

I wouldn’t say that I cross-reference the manuals but I do see the conduct of other branches and the one I’m in and compare the actions of individuals of similar grade between the branches.

Anything you do to give yourself an edge is good. That said as a leader pulling ideas on leadership and regulations from other branches just helps you be a more knowledgeable leader and knowledge is power. I was SF and we found ourselves in many joint operational sittuations so its usefull to know how they do things.

SSgt Nicholas Merchant and I think that is what drives me to want to know more about the other branch's style SF integrates more often w/ other than we used to. Terminology & method are a great thing to know, so that you're not the stereotypical Airman looking at the rest of the squad going, "I don't know what that means. Can you translate to Air Force-ese?" LOL

A1C, I think that learning the way that the other branches does a lot in developing yourself as a leader. The fact that you're doing this as an E3 shows that you already care about the mission. I was Army. In 2002, I found myself in an Army Company assigned to a Marine Batallion in Africa. My post Sergeant Major was USMC. My post Commander was USN. Our Military Police Company was relieved by a USAF SP unit when we jumped to Iraq. Keep charging forward. You'll do very well.

I think that in a Joint environment, it aids in seeing things from another Service's optic. I am all about continuing education in any forum. :)
