So im considered "Prior Service" but i never ETS'd im switching from Guard to Active as an 11X recruit (signed the papers today) ive been told im starting at day 0 by the counselor. Wouldnt i have to start at the second half of OSUT ? I was told i would never have to go to basic training again.

Call the school house and ask. OSUT is now 22 weeks, is 16 weeks instead of 22 a deal breaker?
Switching to Infantry is a huge change in lifestyle and I am not sure that I wouldn't advise starting day one. The prior service people weren't hassled as much as long as they knew their stuff, but physically it's another world.

*Update* So im currently at Benning doing the whole reception gig, Prior Service guys were all separated from the Boots. Only the Navy/Airforce guys have to go to day 0 and everyone else without break of service gets inserted.

At what point of training did you get inserted? How were you treated?

They changed the rules after they eliminated the Warrior Transition Course at Fort Sill, OK. Everyone goes through full Infantry OSUT again if it has been more than 3 years since your last time on Active Duty in the 11 series MOS (National Guard time does not count). This is how it was in the early 1980's so this is a return to the old system of training.....that I fell under way back when I was in uniform. If it has been less than 3 years since your ADA BCT then potentially you will get more advanced placement in OSUT but it is also dependent on the PT test assessment they will give you and they will look for your most recent rifle qualification. If both are out of date, you start earlier in OSUT. If both are up to date and look good, potentially they could start you later but not a whole lot later.

What you were promised about not repeating BCT ever again could be true if you stayed on Active Duty your entire time in ADA or related MOS. Once you leave Active Duty though the clock starts ticking as your last Active Duty for Training (ADT) time fades into the past.

im looking at the 30th AG battalion (reception) and it says national guard transitions normally start a little later and it depends on the unit as well

SGT (Join to see) - I don't want to get too involved with this because potentially it changed again slightly BUT I would caution you on the National Guard reading because National Guard has split option as well so they can be sent to Ft. Benning for the first half of OSUT for one summer and return for second half the next summer. Other differences being in the NG are that your on a budget when your there so if you do not make it through the program your state might not approve a second or third chance as some of the Regular Army candidates get (if you get injured or fail). So keep that in mind as well. Also, they will not allow you to volunteer for additional schooling like Airborne, sometimes the Regular Army candidates are allowed to volunteer for that as a follow on course, even though it was not in their contracts. Same with volunteering for Old Guard in Washington D.C. Because your NG and on a state budget you won't be allowed the same opportunity in those few respects. Starting a little later in the cycle in my view means week 3 or 4 not week 9 or 10. You'll see when you get there. Was the last time you finished BCT, 3 or more years ago? That plays a role as well in the decision on where you will start.

i may have confused you sorry. Im switching from Guard to Active and i signed an 11X contract. But ive been told im going day 0 but i never got out. Then im being told that they might have me at day 0 but they'll let me have my freedom and that i may not have to do every bit of the training that BCT privates have to do. Either way i got what i wanted and im prepared for worse so its all good for me SPC Erich Guenther

As a prior-service reclassifying to 11X, do I have to start at Day 0?

No... you got this backwards... You don't re-class TO 11X, you re-class FROM 11X... Why would someone rush to inevitable homelessness and MC'employment? Somewhere out there is a recruiter who should not be able to sleep at night with the burden on his soul...

I can tell you a lot the reasons why, faster rank advancement, physical and mental challenge, getting shoot guns and blow stuff up, and now a pretty substantial bonus that was unheard of in my day. OTOH, I will point out that my profile says Engineer, so I obviously switched Branches.

CPT Lawrence Cable those are the short range considerations of a child....People have gotta think long term.

SSG(P) Matt McLemore - Just statistics. I've done a lot of volunteer work in homeless shelters. Of all the homeless vets I've spoken too, I have yet to meet a former Topographical Analyst or Engineer, but almost all of them are former combat arms.. The truth doesn't have to be pretty to be true. The universe is under no obligation to conform to our desires.

Probably not, but probably earlier than you might hope. Based on when all of our reclasses showed up throughout OSUT.
