I’m a senior Specialist about to pick up stripes with in a couple months, but I’m finding my interests are now pulling away from maintenance. I have friends that have done WOFT and are highly recommending dropping a packet. What can I do to give myself a leg up on other candidates who are applying and what things should I have finished before applying?

Have you looked at this website yet? This is the official WO Recruiting webpage. It has all the prerequisites and requirements listed you will need for your packet. I wouldn’t waste your time or a WO’s time until your packet is 90% complete. You will need a Letter of Recommendation from a Sr WO (W-3 or above, but if you’re submitting to be a flight Warrant I suggest you try to get a letter from at least a W-4).

Whichever WO agrees to write you a letter most likely won’t know you so your for at impression will be key. If you come in with a packet that is complete and only needs his letter it shows you take initiative and know how to find information and what the requirements are. The WO will also most likely want to see your CO and BC’s letters as well since they will know you better and the WO will most likely rely heavily on their recommendations for whether or not they will write you a WO LOR.

As far as giving you a leg up, high GT and SIFT scores and a high PT score is probably the best thing you can do to set yourself up for success. You don’t have any NCOERs to guage your performance on, so realistically all the board has to assess you on is your tests scores, PT, and LORs.

I have read the prerequisites, I just know how the Army is and wanted to see if there was anything else I could do.

Again, high test scores are most likely going to be the best thing you can do. Other than that, civilian education may give you a leg up. If you don't already have a degree, I would just focus on your common core courses; e.g. English, Math, Physics, Econ, etc. You'll get almost 60 credits worth of transfer credit after you finish flight school so focus on classes that you'll need to do anyway so you don't waste your time/money on an elective that you'll ultimately get free credit for later anyway.

Have someone (I'll volunteer) read your resume and look everything over. College and military schools help a lot at the board. Present the best paper version of you to the board and study hard for the sift.

Just started Aviation WOBC today.

I attempted to do the same thing, back in 98, when I was a Senior Light Wheel Vehicle Mechanic/Recovery Specialist 63B1H8, which I believe is now the predecessor to your 91B. Based on what I went through back then here are things I had to go through in submitting my packet: Do you have a current ASVAB, ACT or SAT scores (all within the last year), perfect vision, no allergies (that is what got me disqualified), no profiles (11111 PULHES), and a recent PT Test?
To get the best advice and mentorship: Are there Aviation Warrants at your base? If so, go talk to them and they would be the perfect resource to ensure your success, as they know what you are doing, and successfully completed it.
