SPC (Join to see) , during your monthly counseling, ask your first-line leader what you need to do to get their recommendation for the waiver.
Every first-line leader has different expectations. You need to know what impresses them so that they will enthusiastically recommend you and fight for you against the other candidates.

CSM Maynard is dead on and now that you're eligible for E4, start dong the things you need to do to get promoted to E5. By working toward those goals, your leaders will see that you are truly motivated and have the desire to excell. Something as simple at PT can make a difference. At PT you are in the view of all your unit leaders at the beginning of each day. Trust me, the 1SG knows who the stragglers are and how the hot shots are. When slots for schools come up, you want him to think of your name before anyone eleses. If your PT test score isn't the max now, work on it and get it moving in that direction. Good luck!

ALL these top NCOs are right and I know they are speaking from experience. From my personal point of view, I got waivers from PV2 to PFC and then from PFC to SPC. What I can say it that it all comes down to the SEPARATION. You need to separate yourself from the lot. Be the first to show up and start working when others wait to be told. Don't wait till room inspection to get your room tidied up. Don't wait to be told to get a hair cut. Don't wait to be told to get some civilian classes going. All these are what they call TAKING INITIATIVE. They may seem so little and almost insignificant but they add up and that might be the urge you will have other others who are competing for the same waivers. It is a competition so separate yourself positively. Oh and lastly, choose your friends carefully...GUILTY BY ASSOCIATION is very real!

I think SSG Perez has the best answer. True commitment is the key to success in the military. Give everything you do and all aspects of being a Soldier your absolute best effort. Easier said than done. Good luck.
Go to and win Soldier of the Month/Quarter boards. This is the easiest way to distinguish yourself from your peers.
Ask to go to resident courses and make yourself useful to the unit.
Work on civilian education and do correspondence courses. You should be letting your counselor know all the things that you are doing and he's going to be the one who pushes for your promotion.

SPC (Join to see) What makes you think you deserve the waiver? What distinguishes you from the other PFCs in the battalion?
