Quick Question,

So here is the situation. I am currently deployed to Iraq with the 82nd ABN DIV, a Soldier from the 513th MI BDE deployed to Kuwait is up in Iraq helping us for 30 days. Since his unit is not authorized a Combat Patch based on AR 670-1 Para 21-17…“(16) Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR): between 15 June 2014 and a date to be determined, for Soldiers deployed to Iraq, Jordan, or Syria in support of OIR, who received combat zone tax exclusion and hostile fire/IDP as identified by CENTCOM Command Center-Joint Staff for Personnel and Administration. Soldiers who were deployed in the area of operations on training exercises or in support of operations other than OIR are not authorized the SSI-FWTS, unless those exercises or operations became combat or support missions to OIR”. However, it does say “(d) Individual Soldiers who are attached (to include OPCON, cross-leveled, assigned, or augmenting deployed units) will wear the same SSI-FWTS worn by members of the deployed Army unit (company or higher) to which attached by written orders.

Without a clear definition of “OPCON, cross-leveled, assigned, or augmenting deployed units” I am a bit confused. So how do you read between these lines? Since his unit is not “in theater” his command is not authorized one. But since he is simply TDY into county to support and not on official attachment orders he does not fall into any of the aforementioned categories.

I have a feeling a simply set of 30 day attachment orders would make this legit and he could wear the 82nd Patch.

How do you all read it?

An attachment order for any length of time would resolve it. One day is enough.

Thank you for your response Sir that is what I was thinking. Now if I am unable to get him attachment orders would he authorized to wear the 513th as a SSI-FWTS?

it happens, not right but for some reason personnel attached to other units are forgotten, the attached unit thinks the home unit will handle the paper work. The home unit dose not know what is going on so the awards or combat credit falls to the way side. One time I was told you where TDY so you where not there, so you are not qualified to any thing the unit got.

It happened to me! I deployed with 6 other soldiers from my Division (active duty) to Desert Storm. I was attached and I did not receive SSI-FWTS orders, nor did I receive medals. In Riyadh, I was told I would receive orders from my home unit. I was told at ETS that it would all be fixed. Never happened! I should ever left until it was fixed (hindsight being 20/20). I have no idea what to do to fix it. No paperwork, it didn't happen. I was there and it is a bitter feeling not having anything to show for it. I am terrified of claiming or wearing anything as I do not want to be told I have stolen valour. My colleagues all went to different units when we arrived (comically, as there was an air raid going off when we landed, the tower air crew were all in masks and kicking us out the door to bug out of the AO.) Anyway, thank you for saying something, I know I must not be alone. If you know how I can fix it, please let me know!

If the 1610 says in block 9: ISO of OIR Mission, and then in block 11 shows the itinerary of departing Kuwait to Iraq for the TDY, does the SM still earn the SSI-FWTS? Also, in the remarks section it states:
TDY TO OTHER LOCALITIES AUTHORIZED ON ORDERS ISSUED BY HOST COMMAND
MISSION CRITICAL TDY
