MSG - I think those units should be able to separate themselves by wearing the beret. I enlisted in 2011, so I have only lived in the army as a soldier who wears the PC daily and the beret during special events so I believe my opinion is very "green". I like that the Infantry enjoys certain accoutrements on their ASU uniforms, so I can't deny the fact that I would like to stand out amongst the crowd wearing a colored beret.

I would leave it the way it is, patrol cap with ACU's, and beret with dress uniforms. As far as the tan/green/maroon beret goes, I say let them wear it all the time.

Beret only for formal events. No more soldiers living in hot conditions mowing grass in wool hats! Where was the Army safety team when that decision was made... can anyone say heat stroke!

I think it was one of the worst changes that the then COS made during his tenure, the beret other than for the specialized units that worked hard to earn it, should have never been forced on the regular Army, it was not weather friendly or protective for everyday use in BDUs or ACUs.
I think it was one of the best decisions to go back to the PC for everyday use, and the beret for ASUs and special occasions, but allow the specialized units that earned them, keep them for their specialty and we will use it for special events.

How about just ditching the Army-wide berets, all together, and going with the garrison or service covers?

I still have my BDU summer patrol cap. Wish they would come out with another summer cap to wear.

MSG Morgan - I'm probably a minority in this, but I've always liked the beret and thought that it made the troops look that much more professional in a garrison environment. That being said, it's not very utilitarian, has a tendency to overheat the head, dishevel hair (I know, we're all supposed to have high-and-tights, right?) and there are far too many interpretations on how it's formed and positioned, making about %50 of the people wearing it look terrible. The patrol cap is great for working outdoors and is an easy turn-to for when you just gotta get some headgear on. My personal opinion? Beret for garrison and formal (or ASU Dress Hat for formal - looks slick), patrol cap for work details and field wear. Or the boonie cap. That thing is awesome for the field.

All good points SGT Henrie. I prefer the PC wit the ACU and beret with the ASU, but have to admit, I did like the marron beret when I was in an Abn unit.

SGT Kenneth, how about SF, Abn and Ranger units? What's your take on these special units?

Absolutely they should wear their berets. They have earned the right to distinguish themselves apart from the "normal" force. My only thing with the maroon beret is to limit it purely to those who have earned their jump wings. Legs who just happen to be in an airborne unit should, IMO, be barred from the maroon beret.
I understand uniformity, but they haven't earned it.

I think it a shame that the entire Army switched to using the Black Beret which initially was for those who earned it through the hard work and completion of Ranger School! If they wanted a beret for the rest of the Army they should have given them the the new tan ones! But, my choice between patrol cap and beret I pick my beret I earned it!!

I would actually like to see a different color beret for specific job fields. Like one for MI, MP's, Eng.etc

The beret should be worn. Wear it based off of ur SQI. No matter what unit ur in. Then it would be all about pride and earning it.
