I understand the US Army in the last few years reawarded a contract to Beretta to supply our service pistol which as you all know is the M9. Personally I like the Glock 19 a lot better. It costs less, more accurate, same capacity, easy to clean, and doesn't jam nearly as often. In your opinion, which should be used as our standard sidearm? Glock or Beretta? I pick Glock, I'd choose Colt 1911 .45 but that would never happen.

You’ll never see a striker fired pistol adopted by the military for safety reasons. The Beretta has that long double action trigger and external safety. While the 1911 was single action it had the external safety and grip safety.
Personally I’m not a fan of Glock due to how they feel in my hand. I had a Glock G29 10mm and I gave it to my son. For a similar handgun I like the M&P series. They have much better ergonomics.
I own a Beretta 92FS and I like it, but the grip is a little on the large side.

SFC (Join to see) I sincerely hope you're mistaken about the bias against striker fire for "safety" (truly training) issues, I'm worried you may be right in the US military. Many other militaries have adopted striker fire. Guns should be designed to fire under all circumstances (improper grip, slippery hands, one handed, immediately upon draw-stroke), NOT firing a gun should rely on discipline, not mechanics.

I'm a huge fan of the Beretta M9 / 92FS. It is a great design. Of all my personally owned Handguns I have made by major manufacturers, it is the only one that I have never had a failure to fire/ eject/ load/etc. I have had few with Glocks, which shocked me when it happened.
I feel all the bad press from military reference the M9 comes from how badly they are maintained at the unit level (too include the magazine). I have had numerous failures with Military issued M9s (and M4s for that matter).
All that being said, in the end, for me, it all comes down to what you will carry everyday. For me Glocks are the all around go to gun for size, weight, simplicity, accuracy, durability, availability of holsters etc.
9mm versus 40 cal does not matter for me. I'm fine with either. I like the higher capacity of the 9mm, but I also like the harder hitting 40 cal round....based on the benefits and constraints of each, I consider them equal.
So in the end, I carry a Glock in 40 S&W 99% of the time.

LTC Paul Heinlein Sir, always good points. Now I'm with you on just about everything. I definitely call the lever on the glock the de-cock, since that's what it really is. DA/SA is always a challenge, honestly Im much more accurate with a DA/SA sig after the first round than I ever am with a glock striker fire.
Finally: I hear you about the on post method. Isn't it outrageous? hopefully we can get more RP people to our discussion to address it.

Taking this comment into context, I to am more accurate with my SIGs (in SA) then my Glocks. But, the difference in accuracy is not significant enough for me to choose it over the other benefits to the Glocks. I want to be able to not like them, but for me, they are the best around choice for on duty and off duty carry.

I'm with CPO Mahoney, 1911 was designed right. The forces need to teach Marksmanship, not Spray and Pray! .45ACP does the job the first time. Every one involved learned that in the Philippines the first time!

Not a fan of Glock have no problem with Beretta prefer Sig Sauer or HK. For my personal taste hammer over striker fire. Be careful when you extrapolate law enforcement findings to a military setting. While I agree with the findings regarding less recoil of a 9mm allowing faster, mnore accurate follow-on shots, this also popoped up: "9mm Luger now offers select projectiles which are, under identical testing conditions, I outperforming most of the premium line .40 S&W and .45 Auto projectiles tested by the FBI." The basis of 9mm performing as well as bigger calibers is basesd on that fact that police are not restricted to any single type of ammo. Modern JHPs allow the 9mm to punch above it's weight. However, when you are talking strictly FMJ rounds that do not yaw in tissue, bigger is better.

I have used both the M9 (Beretta 92FS) and the Glock 19 in some very harsh conditions in Iraq. Based on my mission and opportunities at the time, I had access to additional "equipment", including both weapons. I found that in dry/dirty environments, even with regular maintenance, the M9 tends to jam or misfeed fairly frequently. To test the Glock 19, I pulled it straight out of the box (brand new). I never oiled / cleaned it and despite the environmental conditions, was able to fire 600-700 rounds through it over time with no jams or misfeeds whatsoever. As for reliability and functionality (which should be our main concerns for a combat weapon, NOT just price), the Glock far out-performs the M9. The only change I would make would be to use a .40 cal (perhaps the Glock 23), since it has better power than the standard 9mm ball rounds, yet still is compact enough to not add excessive bulk to your equipment load. The Glock 23 (yes, I own one, so maybe I'm a bit biased) is a highly reliable firearm and holds 13 rounds, so there would be minimal degredation to capability. This could be countered by adding a 4th magazine to the basic load authorization.
And to top it all off, get rid of the ball rounds and authorize hollow points for all personnel who are assigned a sidearm.

I have owned and carried flocks for over 15 years and can tell you they are 10 times better tha the M9. That is why across law enforcement Glock is leader in what departments choose to issue to Thier LEOs.

Glock. I carried the Beretta for years and am a fan. Currently use the Sig P229 DAK. Like Sig...not a fan of the DAK trigger. I carried the Glock (as a civilian LEO) for years and love the simplicity and reliability. I own all, but shoot my Glock most often.
Skimming some of the posts. Interesting comments on marksmanship, stopping power, etc. My $0.02. If you apply logic and critical thinking to the traditional teaching of military marksmanship, you begin to dispel myths and get to the real data. For instance...is proper grip a "fundamental" or is it a tactic? Food for thought.

The glock is a much better weapon it's much more reliable. I have used the glock 22 for work for the past 2 years now and I have never had an issue. The 15 round mag is perfect and the .40 cal has better stopping power then the 9mm for obvious reasons. My second choice even though not an option is the sig229.

I did a piece by piece critique of the Beretta somewhere on RP but cant find it now, BLUF: contact shots are nearly impossible as it gets pushed out of battery easily when pressed against something.
But truly? The best pistol is the one you have on you when you need one. One of the greatest threats to our military today when not deployed is being disarmed by law, maybe we can roll that trend back? Come lend a hand.
