Some military movies got overlooked in the recognition department. I liked "The Siege of Firebase Gloria"-just because R. Lee Ermey rocked it with his one-liners! What other less-known tasty military nuggets are out there, possibly undiscovered?

Enemy at the Gates with Jude Law is also a great movie that is under-rated - probably because the Soviets became our enemies after WWII.

Enemy at the gates has a strong cast despite being relatively under the radar with Jude Law, James Woods, Ron Perleman. it was another great film.

Terrific movies????? - Enemy At The Gates", Platoon, All Quiet On The Western Front, Saving Private Ryan, Taking Chance was powerful, Gardens Of Stone, Tribes, also powerful and underrated, and Good Morning Vietnam, and others like the Sniper movies were underrated, as well, I believe.

One of the best movies I've seen that got very little press was "Taking Chance". Really powerful story with Kevin Bacon as a Marine returning a fallen Marine to his home that really grabbed hold of me and stirred some emotions that I usually keep buried pretty deep.

Excellent choice. This was hard but necessary film to watch. HBO did well and Kevin Bacon was outstanding IMO paying respect to the Marine Corp and the honor escorting a fallen service member home. Tears will fall.

I always thought 'Gardens of Stone' was underrated, it was a great film, a stellar cast, and you can't even find it on DVD (other than bootleg)... what's up with that?!

I like this movie:

Apocalypse Now is a 1979 American epic war film set during the Vietnam War, directed and produced by Francis Ford Coppola and starring Martin Sheen, Marlon Brando, and Robert Duvall. The film follows the central character, U.S. Army special operations officer Captain Benjamin L. Willard (Sheen), of MACV-SOG, on a mission to kill the renegade and presumed insane U.S. Army Special Forces Colonel Walter E. Kurtz (Brando).

My favorite was Spy Game with Robert Redford and Brad Pitt. Although it is about the CIA more than the military, it could still be considered a military movie. It is complex and I think it didn't do well in theaters because audiences really have to pay attention to understand what is going on and need to know something about Cold War history and geography. I have watched it a dozen times and I have seen something I missed every time. It's full of one-liners too. Anyone in the military who has had to deal with the pencil-necks in DC can appreciate it.

Hanoi Hilton. SERE school can't prepare you for the reality enough. Mandatory viewing for your troops prior to deploying. Please be in the right frame of mind when you watch this movie. It is gut wrenching to say the least. It is one of those films that you owe it to your troops to expose them to it. I used it for SGT's Time training whenever I did classes on the Code of Conduct. My old CAV CSM had a policy to review all SGT Time training and when he saw "Code of Conduct" he came to light me up......he stayed till the end, along with the SCO.

SFC Mark Merino Look around and find the book "When hell was in session" It will give you physical pain.

In When Hell Was in Session, Jeremiah Denton, the senior American officer to serve as a Vietnam POW, tells the amazing story of the almost eight years he survived as a POW in North Vietnam. In 1966, he appeared on a television interview from prison and blinked the word torture in Morse Code, confirming for the world that atrocities were taking place in the Hanoi Hilton. And while in prison, he acted as the senior officer and looked after the morale of his troops at great risk to himself. After his release in 1973, Denton was promoted to rear admiral and in 1980 won election to the United States Senate where he worked with President Reagan to fight communism in Latin America. This new and updated edition of this classic book provides new insights into Denton's years in the Senate where he was a key leader in promoting the Reagan Revolution.
