Black boots for one reason: shining boots in the barracks is the single best team building exercise in the Army.

Are you thinking back to when barracks were open bay? Still think that's when there was unit cohesion and the troops looked out for each other.

Spit shining your black boots in garrison was a sign of the pride a military member has in their appearance, and themselves as a service member. The same could be said for pressing your fatigues instead of tumble dry and wear. The best boots I ever wore are pictured, for the field, and garrison the Jungle Boot, for the field in the winter time the Herman Survivor Combat Boot, and for garrison the Jump Boot.
