By a vote of 54-42, the Senate rejected a bill that would ban abortions of a fetus that is 20 weeks, is the senate being fair to our unborn?

the bill would prohibit abortions in cases where the probable age of the fetus is 20 weeks or later, except in cases of rape, incest against a minor or when the life of the pregnant woman is in danger. Specifically, it would provide an exemption for pregnancies that are the result of rape against adult women if the woman obtained counseling or medical treatment for the rape at least 48 hours before the abortion.

Here in lies the crux of the problem, at what point does the unborn have more rights than the mother? Until the day the child is born it is still unborn. This bill makes no exception for birth defects that could be detected in utero, accidents that may occur to the mother after the 20th week that could cause the fetus trauma or stress that would not allow to it live, or live a normal life. So are we as a society now going to take care of that child? What happens to the this person if now the state has to take care of this neonate if the mother doesn't live? Who picks up that expense? If the child becomes a ward of the state, they reside in the state until they are 18 and then kicked to the curb. The statistics un non adopted wards of the state being successful aren't that great. So are we being unfair to the unborn you ask? Better not to pass poorly written legislation than to pass garbage to appeal to the conservative right. Now you may think I am some liberal(which I am not) I have as a street paramedic for 10 years, you don't know what hard is until you deliver a preemie in the field, knowing it was going to die, or worse watching it happen.

CW2 Kevin Storm, you raised some very interesting and thought provoking arguments on why this may have happened and thank you for your service, but I do disagree with your labeling of this legislation as garbage.

No they are not SGM (Join to see).
Those who voted against the protection of those in utero over 20 weeks generally do not care about human life. However I expect most would love to be photographed alongside people carrying "black lives matter," "all lives matter," etc. placards.

Abortion has become a battleground in the American culture wars none of which will be settled in Congress. Sadly, with journalists and matinee idols flying cover for the abortion industry, the voices of morality are lost in the din. Until we can learn to use popular media to our advantage (and gain some leverage there) we won't make any progress. Preaching to the choir and slinging pejoratives at those who champion abortion isn't helping, is it?
