Can a Drill Sergeant become a Green Beret? If so, would they finish out their DS duty? Or would they have to leave DS duty early?

Drill Sergeant is just a special duty assignment, not an MOS. A DS won’t be allowed to attend selection until close to the end of their drill tour, which is two years. After they finish their time on the trail they would go to the SFQ course and earn their green beret

Thank you! I’m aware that a DS isn’t an MOS. I was curious because I’ve been to SFAS before and it seemed that SFAS takes priority.

SPC (Join to see) Not at all, Drill and Recruiting branch have to release their Soldiers and won’t do so until the end of their tour. I had a DS in my SFAS as well. He was at the end of his tour and had to wait till the end to attend the Q course.

It would be highly unlikely that the Army would relieve a DS from that assignment prematurely in order fo pursue another assignment unless: A. The needs of the Army for the follow on assignment were greater (more immediate); B. The DS was very close to the end of that assignment (Within a week or two); C. The DS was not in a critical part of the OSUT cycle, or D. The Army had a suitable and immediate replacement for that DS.
In all probability, if the DS were selected for SF school, orders would be calculated around their current assignment and they would pick up in the earliest class following their release from the trail.
I suspect, given your current rank, you are considering whether to go one way or the other or would like to do both. If the latter is the case then pursue the DS route first, then SF. It might not be practical or even possible to do it the other way around. Get some guidance from your 1SG or CSM who should be able to point you in the right direction to get these and other questions answered.
I hope this helps and wish you the best.

LTC Wayne Brandon - my point being, like you, I agree that DS will take priority until you are PCS eligible, not a second sooner.

LTC Jason Mackay - I've been away from the Army for 24 years and know that things change and normally don't chime in on policy questions. But having been a DS who was once interested in SF, I was told that was not an option until the end of my assignment.

LTC Wayne Brandon - sounds like life on the trail hasn't changed much from what my contacts have said . It has intensified recently with the demand for DS multiplying because they are putting them back at AIT after a long absence.

LTC Jason Mackay - That's been the plan for a year or a little longer but my son who is stationed at Ft. Gordon told me he hasn't seen any. He is a section chief in the department of Quality Assurance for Army Cyber Communication training.

SF may serve as Drill SGTs.
A Drill SGT May attend SFAS at 18 months time on the trail, and not PCS until 2 years time on trail
A SELECT memo is good for 2 years as well.
You can go to SFAS now, as SGM (Join to see) said.
SF and Drill SGT are about the two most opposite jobs there are, as well as being incredibly similar.
Both take people who know little to nothing about warfighting and teach them the basics. One does it through strict attention to minor details and the threat of UCMJ/breach of contract - the other does it because they will take those people and fight with them.
