So I am trying to get advice to a Soldier in my prior unit regarding PME while deployed. Currently the SM is deployed and toward the end of deployment he is scheduled for SLC. Can the chain do an operational deferment to keep him from attending the course? I understand that toward the Army is putting emphasis on SMs to attend PME and PCS while deployed. I would say if the unit is fully manned and able to complete the mission he should not have to defer his course. Also would like info from people currently serving due to regs changing in the last few years. So does anyone know the reg for deferments also?

Previously, yes the Soldier could defer and promote. The Army recently released a new MILPER or ALARACT on the subject. While I didn't read the whole thing, I believe I remember it saying the deployment exemption was removed and that Soldiers MUST attend even when deployed.

So it was the Soldier that deferred or the Unit?
