I would say YES. If you distinguish yourself and unit by going above and beyond what was expected of you then the responsibility is the host unit to recognize your efforts and most do just that. Congratulation on a job well done!

Years ago, maybe May of 2000 I was involved in a War Fighter Exercise in Graf Germany. Right in the middle of the exercise the communications went down. I was the only person there that just had current training on Sinqgars radios and how to bring them back up on line to restore coms. This happened so many times during the exercise I was getting very good at it.

I was a Staff Sergeant at the time and my host unit Commander from the USA wrote me up a glowing Army Commendation award stating in part that had the coms not been restored in a timely manor the whole Exercise would have been in jeopardy. With the exercise being so top heavy with brass I could have imagined seeing heads roll.

The Lt. Col. appreciated my coolness and positive attitude. In fact the confidence I demonstrated helped him get through a very stressful situation. The Army Commendation Medal came as a huge surprise to me because two days before I excelled. I overslept and my Commander had to walk two miles to the exercise site and boy was he ticked off. I not only took the heat for screwing up but I profusely apologized to stave off the Article 15 he was going to give me!
