I have an NCO who is being forced to compete in an Audie Murphy board 8 days after notification. Is there any justification to get him out of it? The 1SG is relentless, and the CSM is unresponsive pertaining to the situation.

This is a good NCO, who doesn't want to make a fool of himself at a prestigious Corps level board.

Just another new generation of Military that doesn't want to comply with tradition. Like another attempt to change us over to this NEW ORDER that I sometimes hear the younger talk about. Soon there will be soldiers taking a knee during out National Anthem just like Kaepernick does. PLEASE don't let me see you do this in front of me.

I was pulled out of an ARTEP, in 88 to go to the Sgt Morales board in Germany. Had to get my class A's done at a two hour cleaners and then cram. I didn't do all that well, but it taught me to keep a set of A's ready just in case.

Boards are a non negotiable, you have to trust that your leaders see something in you that you may not. Boards are a part of Army life, if you think it ends I competed at boards for BDE PSG of the year, oh and it didn't stop there, this summer for I Corps best 1SG board. I didn't volunteer, but was selected. Everyone's worst fear is the CSM will tell you you're a disgrace, but in 19 years and sitting on numerous boards it's never said, just do your best, whether your recommended or not the next day you're still a soldier, still an NCO, and if you want to believe it or not, your better for going through it.

I had never heard of the SAMC before this. Seems oddly like something the Army wouldn't approve of. Excellence should be recognized by promotion and increased responsibility, not inclusion in a club.

I was selected as command SOY, IOY (instructor of the year) and contender for our regional SOY. You have to be confident even when you dont know the answer. The board will hunt and peck to find this. It is the Board's job to see how you respond in difficult situations because life in the military is governed by the book, but real life doesn't know how to read. Good luck have confidence.

Lastly there is a difference between looking great and being great.

I feel that any situation that you are not comfortable with prepares you for the ultimate situations. If your out on a mission and your left in command of a squad in a firefight are you going to say I'm not prepared or will you suck it up and complete the mission?

First off yes, you can be forced to go to a board. I had to force Soldiers go to boards as a 1SG. I knew my Soldiers were prepared but needed a push. These boards are good for an NCO's growth. As for the CSM being unresponsive, good for him/her to allow his/her 1SG to run their company. No one cares about your career but you for the most part; feel blessed you have a 1SG that actually cares about your NCO's progression.

It's not being told you've got to defend the camp by yourself. It's a board, the 1SG is pushing Leaders out of their comfort zone. I don't see how the notification time line dictates how he cares or doesn't. Every 1SG has been told to pull a rabbit out of a hat at a moments notice. As well it is jumping to conclusions on both of our sides as we don't know if the 1SG had told the company he needed a volunteer it no one came forward, or if the CSM is directing the 1SG's to start providing Soldiers names to attend the boards. I was dictated to provide names for boards. To include the USSOCOM Sildier of the month, said Soldier won and had we not deployed I'm confident would have won USSOC Soldier of the Year. I nearly pulled this Soldier just to compete, but I needed all my medics. So there are a lot of factors here that must be answered before jumping to the conclusion that the 1SG doesn't care. 1SG (Join to see) - All well and good, but this is not about a Soldier of the Month/Year board or a promotion board. It is a SAMA/SAMC board, and they apparently have gotten out of hand.

Wrong answer, 1SG (Join to see) . Audie Murphy boards are scheduled months in advance. This 1SG knew about it. Plus, bombing on a board like this WILL get you looked at in an unfavorable manner. This does indicate the 1SG does not care, because of a lack of notice.

When you know a requirement is coming down, and you don't notify your soldiers, as a leader, you don't care. You expect your soldiers to jump through their asses on a short suspense. There's no getting around that fact without making excuses.

CW3 (Join to see) - How is it you are that confident this 1SG knew of the board? You would rather crucify a career leader in saying he/she doesn't care yet as I wrote above there are many factors that contribute to knowing what's actually going on in this unit. I for one as a 1SG did not know when the Audie Murphy Board was when I was a 1SG. I had 3 months to plan for 7 months of training and then a 9 month deployment to Afghanistan. I had as well a PDSS to plan for and learn as much as I could while there. I have sat on many boards, albeit I have not sat on an Audie Murphy Board, but I understand their relevance in the Army. Having sat on many Promotion Boards, which have a far greater impact on a Soldiers career, I never once held it against a Soldier for a bad performance. I would just not recommend that Soldier for Promotion. After the board we held an AAR and we as the 1SG's told the Soldiers what we thought of their performance. When the Soldier would come back we didn't hold their previous performance against them, that is childish and immature. I am failing to see how the 1SG is wrong and doesn't care about his/her Soldiers Chief. I am more than willing to debate any point you have but I can't accuse a career leader without knowing more of what is happening at that unit.

While this is an extreme honor, it is my understanding that you can still decline the honor.
