A Soldier has been renewing a temporary profile for months to avoid a running for a record APFT. Recently he had his TEMP profile say that he can take an APFT with the 2.5 Mi walk. So my unit ends up counting this as a record for him because they finally want one on record. This doesn't sound right to me but I've heard thereally are some sort of revision to the reg this year that allows a record on temp profile? If anybody can educate me and provide a reference source please.

A Soldier who is on a profile (lets say he turned his ankle and on a 30 day no running profile) can be authorized by the commander to do an alternate aerobic event, if it is checked on his profile, by the profiling doctor.
This is from AR 40-501, Standards of Medical Fitness:
(f) Item 6. Physical Fitness Test. Check either “Yes” or “No” to indicate whether the Soldier can perform the activities for the APFT. The “Yes” or “No” blocks on the alternate APFT need only be completed if the Soldier has restrictions for the regular APFT. If the Soldier cannot perform at least an alternate APFT the profile serial will be at least a 3 and referred to an MEB.
The commander can just wait till the Soldier is off of profile and make that Soldier take an APFT then but yes he is authorized to take an alternate APFT, if the doctor checks the block on the profile form.

MAJ (Join to see)
SSG (Join to see) But the commander may not flag the Soldier to failure to take a PT test if he does not authorize the alternate event within the authorizations of his profile. Nothing wrong with what the Soldier is doing.

I just want to point out a point of order.
The Soldier does not renew a profile, a medical officer does. If the MEDO says the issue is legit, it is legit.
If the commander feels that there is an issue there, he should engage with the profiling officer to ensure that he is properly apprised of the Soldier's conditions, prognosis, and physical therapy requirements.
If this temp has been renewed twice, the Soldier should be examined to determine whether he should have a permanent profile or potentially a Fit For Duty Physical or MRB. "Temporary" issues do not often linger for many months or years.

1SG, I used to get temporary profiles quite a bit due to a chronic shoulder injury. I finally got to the point where I would take a record APFT when the shoulder wasn't flaring up, even if I wasn't due one, so that I wouldn't go over the six months due to profiles.

Yes, he can. Please see Army Directive 2016-07.
"(2) Profiling officers will write all temporary profiles for the entire expected
duration of the duty limitation up to 90 days. Given that temporary profiles do not
prevent Soldiers from taking the Army Physical Fitness Test, profiling officers will
designate on DA Form 3349 when the Soldier can take the test. The profiling officer
may also designate on the form that the Soldier take an alternate aerobic event.
(3) Soldiers will no longer have an automatic recovery period after the
termination of their temporary profiles. "
