SGT (Join to see) PTDY can be used for many things, but the most common use is for house hunting, I've never seen anything in the reg that limits when you can use that PTDY, but would the unit approve it? Who knows

If I was a Commander, I could see a scenario where I'd approve it. If a soldier arrived without their family, and didn't take PTDY en route to my organization, but wanted to take PTDY later on to facilitate his family's move into the area, I would be okay with that.

To go into more detail. This soldier arrived to the unit 4 months ago. Their spouse was attending Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training. They didn't take PTDY for house hunting to get their house/apartment and their stuff from back home. Now that their spouse has completed their training and arrived to the installation, they want to know if they can take PTDY to get their stuff from back home. I myself haven't seen anything in the reg that limits them from doing this. Thank you for your responses.

SGT (Join to see) - My knowledge of the regs is a little stale now (retired in 2011), but it would really depend on the specific circumstances behind the request. The devil is in the details. PTDY can be granted for house-hunting, but not for packing/moving/unpacking. If the SM who is already stationed there has been living in the barracks or a hotel, then they could get PTDY to look for a place to live, but not to go back for their household goods. If they already have a house/apartment, then the house-hunting process is over. I don't see where the regulation allows a Commander to grant PTDY for someone to go back home to get their stuff and then move it to the new duty station. I once had a duty station stop my PTDY on the date my lease was signed, even though I still had more days left on my PTDY (and was charged leave for those days). The lease was the end of the house hunting, and the unpacking was immaterial.
