I'm currently a wheeled vehicle mechanic but have always been fascinated with anything aviation. I'm hoping I can reclass to any kind of aviation mechanic. If that isn't an option I will leave active army and attend this school and get a degree in something I've always wanted to do. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I went to Hallmark Institute of Aeroutics in San Antonio Florida for General and most of Power Plant. That school was a diploma mill. Then I went to Embry Riddle in Daytona. In 3 days of classes I had learned more than my entire 7 months at Hallmark.

Embry Riddle is to aviation what Harvard is to Law. It is a professional (expensive) school. The Prescott campus is pretty neat, but Daytona was great. Some of the instructors are also engineering teachers. They fail engineers that do not design things that mechanics can work on. They are insanely expensive, but the stamp on your resume will be worth it.

CPL(P) (Join to see) I lived right next to the campus in Prescott and you might notice that I have a bit of education from Embry Riddle. SFC (Join to see) SFC (Join to see) . I have not been paid to endorse ER but I have vast experience with it personally and with those who obtained part or all of their education there. I am still here. They "kept them flying" as Gen Dugan once advised me. You are still here. Ask the people who are flying you around, keeping them flying, fixing them to get them turned and burned ASAP where they learned. I can guarantee there will be ER attendees/graduates in the education chain.

I forgot to mention, this is a job that can give you the world. You are required to have an A&P in order to touch any US aircraft. That is something that you can take whether you live in the Philippines or Italy. It opens the world.

Embry-Riddle is the finest civilian aviation school in the country, and one of the finest in the world. You wouldn't go wrong, to go there. Spendy, though.

Can anyone give me input on Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University? I plan on becoming an aviation mechanic and would like some input

If you want to be an aircraft mechanic in the private sector you will need an Aircraft & Powerplant license. If you are planning on reclassing your military experience will allow you to take a two week refresher for your license. That depends on your MOS and approval by the FAA. Certain MOses will allow you to test for only the A or P. Crewchiefs are usually eligible for both the A&P. Hope this helps.

Crew chiefs are eligible after 3 years of continuous MOS experience as a 15T. You should take the refresher course and also contact the FSDO on it. This will provide you the best overall advantage. In the civilian world they make you get your own tools. That's a price tag that is rather unfortunate. Embry-Riddle has some connections with Snap-on and Matco I think. They hook you up with your training set.

You're going to be hands on building aircraft windshields and doing cool stuff. The course is arduous at least my experience there was 0730 to 430 every day.

Choose between cheep & diploma mill and name brand. If you're going to work on your own Cessna 150 and don't care if you live or die, go off to Tampa and do their fly by night course. If you're going to be working on the scarebus and boeing aircraft then by all means due the respect of the lives that you're entrusted to keep aloft and go to a formidable school.

I attended erau and honestly thier are betterways to go about it im still paying my loans off for aeronautical science. Also erau 1 of the top schools id also recommend looking at north dakota, daniel webster, arizona state and even dowling college. Id recommend knocking out all your general ed stuff through ta whole your in so its less you pay at any university.

SFC I agree with your assessment. Don't spend money at ERAU on anything that is not degree specific and can be transferred in.

Having been a graduate student and adjunct faculty member, I'm well aware of ERAU's well-deserved reputation, but I'm not familiar enough about the A&P program to comment specifically on that. In any case, if the subject is aviation, I can't see a better option.

See, this is the kind of answer you get from a quality ERAU person. The school has a lot of ascot wearing entitled kids, but in industry those guys don't get far and have to go to work for one of their parent's friends' companies rather than owning their future. Conversely, there are a lot of hard working folks that come through and they are the ones that have built and perpetuate the "Harvard of the air" reputation. This professor gave an honest and forthright answer, no fluff, no twist. Major, thank you for being a perfect example of what to expect at the school.

I'm working on a Bachelors in Aeronautic Science. ERAU is one of the finest and priciest schools there is, but there are few that arent higher in quality

I went there for my undergrad engineerig degree. It is a good school for engineers. For mechanics and pilots it is pricey but overall a very good school.
