My daughter is about to start her senior year in High School, and is interested in exploring ROTC scholarships/programs. Specifically, she is interested in public relations or civil affairs. Can anyone offer any advice on where to start (other than an ROTC recruiter) or anything else she might find helpful?

I have U of O experience, but it was back in the day. Let me know if you need it.

Does she know if she wants to go active duty or into the reserve component? Is she looking to 'synch' her degree with branch?

COL Randall C. I'm not sure that she has that completely worked out yet, Sir, but I think she is leaning toward active. By 'sync' do you mean same degree, ROTC Program, and branch? If so, then yes, I believe so. Air Force offers a scholarship for Public Relations.

Sync meaning her degree directly affects which branch she will get. I.e. Nurse cadets are sync'd, as you need a BSN to qualify for an Army Nurse Corps position.

SGT Richard H. Rgr above regarding Synced degree.

The way I see it, she needs to make a few choices.

1a) What service does she want to go into? That's going to have an impact because not all Services are taught at each ROTC program. There can be overlap between the services (i.e., 'sharing' classes to meet requirements), but she might have to attend classes at another location depending.

1b) What degree does she want?

1c) Does she want to go Active or Reserve Component?

I put them all as #1s because the decisions can/will impact on each other. If she wants to go into Army ROTC, then it might impact on the degree program available and vice versa.

Regarding the AC vs RC, there are a lot of scholarships out there. When you think of "ROTC scholarship", traditionally, you are thinking of the 2, 3 or 4 year that involves an AC commitment as part of the overall service commitment. Note: These scholarships are generally hard to get ... needs of the service on degree, great grades, how the interview goes, etc.

For the RC side, the Army pretty much has the lock on scholarships (Not saying that the Navy/Air Force don't have ones, but I couldn't find any) and the ARNG has the edge over USAR.
...USAR: GRFD (Guaranteed Reserve Forces Duty) and SMP
...ARNG: GRFD, SMP, Dedicated ARNG scholarships, state TA, etc.

BUT ... all these things rely upon your daughter figuring out what she wants to do :)

If she is angling for a scholarship, she needs to start the process now.

LTC Paul Labrador This is a fairly new revelation for her, Sir, but it's moving fairly fast. She is out of state visiting family currently, but will be back in about a week, so we can get to the business at hand. The deadlines that I've found thus far are 1DEC.

Keep her on it. Scholarships are highly competitive.

I already got some great information from COL Randall C. on this one, so I'm looking to expand on that.
