I passed the board recently and now im being told i may have to be a CPL until i go to BLC or until i get back from ranger school. I dont want to take responsibility as a team leader and still get paid as a SPC. Can i deny a 4187 ?

As an officer I should not respond but I can't help myself. I was commissioned a CPT, Army based on my education. After maybe 6 months service I was assigned to command a company. TOE called for a major - - sounded like a big deal to me. Many of the Battalion officers were in positions that technically called for rank one above them. I tried my best and I guess it was enough to satisfy my superiors. Upon the end of my tour I was replaced by a major; I guess they had more available. For me it was an honor to have been given the responsibility that I had; maybe another could have done better but it was for me to do it. Your concern about being paid specifically for the hours belongs more in the civilian workplace but don't count on actually being paid by the hour there unless you want to stay in a lower level position. Corporations aren't all that different, they just hide things better than the military.

As an officer commissioned merely because of my education I should probably not respond but I shall anyway. Everyone in the military is assigned a duty and responsibility. From what I saw most of the time the people assigned were to one step above the TOE. I was a CPT, Army. I was assigned to command a company. I did so. After my tour was up I was replaced by a major; the TOE called for a major. I think you should be proud to be given the responsibility of rank above that which you actually hold. Your concern about being paid for the hours is more fitted to the civilian work place.

I was an Specialist in a SGT slot in the USAR. I had the MOS and other quals for the E5 but had to wait for the board to roll around to get promoted. The Command made me what used to be called an "acting Jack", an E5 with the stripes but not the pay until the board season rolled around. It was a privilege to be recognized early for the work I was doing. Don't pass up the opportunity to show what you can do. If you perform, your NCOER should reflect it.

Yes, yes you can. I agree... don't get all the responsibility and bullshit without getting the money. The marines at least do it right. They'll fuck you first and still give you $20. The Army doesn't even spit before they turn you around.

It doesn’t look good and it says that the Soldier isn’t ready to take the responsibility of being a Leader regardless of pay. All E4s in the USMC are NCOs. There are no Specialists.

I suppose you could…but why would the Army want to keep people who are unwilling to master a skillset, being proficient to lead, but refusing to lead? Professional development is a ladder. If you are unable or unwilling to climb, retention becomes an issue. The same is true for GS government workers. There us a built in expectation of training, advancement, leading, training, advancement, leading others. It is a necessary policy to ensure the stability of the organization and mission readiness. Slack not or find the exit.

Huh, hell no. An u wanna be a ranger? How about you adapt and overcome and deal with it. Unless you just don’t wanna lead, then u have no business trying to go to ranger school with some BS like that. Embrace The Suck!

Hmmmm, and with that attitude you are going to try and be a Ranger? You must play the game really well, or there are quotas, because I believe you have not a single idea of what being a Ranger is about. I recommend you turn down the Ranger School. You do realize that the one army value is SELFLESSNESS and NOT Selfishness don't you?
