If I go from army guard to active duty and I'm scheduled for WLC in July but don't attend before I have to report, can they take my E5 rank? I was promoted before the new STEP system.

All required schools to maintain your current rank still applies. You need to hit the promotion Reg so that you're informed. Never turn down a school. Compete WLC of you have the chance. You can't point the finger at anyone else if you fail to do your part.

You will loose rank regardless of WLC attendance. I was active then got out to get my degree and joined the reserves. Was promoted to SGT and attended WLC. Couple of years later came back active duty. And in the process they took a stripe from me. So... It doesn't matter if you have WLC, expect to come into AD as a SPC.

This may have happened. This is not the norm.

You will not keep your rank if you haven't attended WLC. Also, you may be ineligible to switch over to active duty. Check with a local recruiter.

If the rank was earned in the guard then yes, if you earned it on active duty got out went into the guard and are now going back to active duty then no (possibly). This is based on the rules in play in 2002 it may be different now.

Yes. But you may only have to reduce to E-4 depending how long its been since active duty. I went from reserve back to active but since it had been years so I was reduced from E-4 to last active duty rank E-3. So explaining awards and service stripes became a regular occurrence. I have not known anyone transition as a reserve NCO to active as an NCO. I even had to give up promotable status to reclass but quickly boarded again. This has been many years ago and knowing the Services this could have very well changed.

I had to return last active duty MOS as well since my MOS's were not active duty schools.

Do the WLC befor you go active if you can so it is out of the way. If the guidance counlser at MEPS said you are losing rank it happens I lost a strip when I went active from the USAR, Look at AR 601-210 for current rules .

Remember the TIS/TIG requirements for each rank. You can make E5 in the guard without ever meeting time in service requirements for the army. A year in the guard only gives you a couple months of the required time so a lot of the time people are demoted for that reason

Depends on the recruiter...and what he is willing to do for you. The fact you don't have wlc done though does not help. Also how long have you been an E5 counts too

All depends on your new contract.
