So I enlisted in May of this year to be a 91b with airborne training. It's a 4 year contract. I saw the army is offering a bonus for infantry and I want to switch. I got an 87 on my asvab and qualify for most jobs. I'm supposed to ship in a few weeks on August 12th, 2019. Any advice would be appreciated.

Contact your recruiter about a renegotiation to your contract. It is possible, but since you are under 30 days to your ship date, it is a little more complicated because it is now a higher approval authority. Bottom line is the Army would rather keep you for a different job than to lose you altogether as a DEP loss, so more than likely it would be approved.

He said that I could renegotiate it, but there would be no bonus at which point, it honestly isnt worth it to me. As a 91b I'll be stationed on a base more likely than not and if I'm not going to be compensated when I feel I deserve it for choosing a career that is more dangerous and uncomfortable, it isnt worth it to me to switch. It would've been nice tho to get that bonus and gi bill for doing 3 years rather than 4. I really appreciate the input SFC Fullerton.

You are going to have to have a conversation with your Recruiter about this

If your only motivation to be an Infantryman is a bonus then you need to re-evaluate your decision. But yes you can try and you should get the bonus. You also will most likely have a later ship date if you choose to go through with this.

Can I switch my contract from a non bonus job to a bonus job?

My recruiter said I could change, but I wouldn't get a bonus because I've technically already committed to the army. I'm hoping if I stand my ground I can still get the bonus, but if i cant get the bonus I'll keep my original contract for 91b airborne.

Technically until you’ve swore in and taken the oath you aren’t in. Yes you could back out and yes it would really burn your recruiter up.

I guess my question is this. Is the bonus the only motivation? What do you want out of the Army? Think long term beyond just 1 enlistment period. 11B yes you get a bonus and action. What skill set are you getting from the army though? Think long term. What if you get hurt doing your first contract and can’t re-up. What would you do? 11B doesn’t really have a civilian job skill translation. 91B does. If you’re wanting to be combat arms then I am sure many 91B’s can jump in and tell you that when you are deployed (especially if you have airborne school) you aren’t just doing 91B. You will most likely be out with the other folks outside the wire and not just working in the motor pool.

MAJ (Join to see) the main motivation was the bonus, and being able to do less time and get my college paid for. The truth is until I'm in the army, I wont really know whether or not I want it to be a career. But originally when I enlisted my thoughts were definitely on the long term. I'm definitely sticking with what I've got because it isnt worth the trouble of trying to change now. I'll learn a good skill i can use for the rest of my life and I'll have experience jumping out of planes. Infantry honestly sounded like it might allow me to see more of the world tho and allow me access to more schools, which was why I didn't mind switching when I heard about the bonus, but like I said, more trouble than it's worth to switch now and I did make a good decision on what I decided to do.
