I am currently on a Tour of Duty ( I am a Reservist), but I want to switch my home reserve unit prior to returning. Reason is because I am trying to go to Kuwait in January, but I get home in October, which isn't much time to switch Units and get orders approved. I don't want to sit around for 3 months either , so I want to switch as soon as possible. Thank you for any responses.

The answers is yes. Submit your form 4651. If your commander is willing to release you, there will be no issues.

The answer is NO. You are assigned to the unit you are currently in until 90 days after REFRAD.
There are circumstances where the commander can waive part of this period, but under no circumstances can you be reassigned while currently activated. Such an action, if approved (it won't be) would result in your immediate release from active duty.
If it is time-sensitive, I would recommend you seek an early REFRAD from your current unit and then seek an expedited transfer if that is approved.

Another option you can look into that Guard soldiers did all the time is just extend your tour. You just have to find an assignment you qualify for. You'll stay assigned to your home unit, but would be attached to whichever unit you'll be working for.

That was on option Sergeant First Class, but I opted with leaving Italy a bit early in order to go to Kuwait in January. Reason is because I'm eligible to go to the board in August and I am very close to getting all the points I need, but I personally feel that for me to be an NCO at the age of 20 without much Active Service or a deployment would be setback when leading people. This deployment should hopefully build character, increase my proficiency in my job, and help me become a better leader.

Can I switch reserve units before I REFRAD?

Just to add, I said yes because I have done it. I'm on the same boat. I'm on a tour of duty - ADOS-RC. While on this set of orders, I was able to switch to a different unit. Could be a case by case but it can definitely be done.

Staff Sergeant, thank you for the advice. On the 4651, was the effective date WHILE on orders or was the effective date your DEROS?

Call and or visit the unit and speak to the unit administrator/Commander. If you are DMOSQ and a MIB Asset chances are good if not it will not happen.
