I've read 670-1 so understand it states I can wear temp tag as long as I am assigned to a unit authorizing it. But while TDY at a school I can't find anything that says can or cant.

I imagine it depends on whether or not the school allows it. PLDC and BNOC, or ANOC shouldn't have any problems with it.

Tdy can include temporary assignment to a different unit , depending on purpose of the school . You didn't State type of school or what your TDY orders state . So unless you're TDY orders assign you to the training unit. It is assumed you are still assigned to your last unit , so in this case temporary badges can be worn, however many local unit's do not favor seeing temp badges from outside their unit's so keep it low-key , not like you can't put it back on when and if you return to the Ice box ...

I had a lot of questions why I wore a Ranger tab over my combat patch but not over my unit patch - though none of the veterans asked.

I'm very curious about this. Could you explain?
The only similar thing I've seen is POGs wearing an SF tab over their Group combat patch, but I never found out why some would do that.

Ok - give me a minute - where did you see SF POGs? If they have the SF tab over their "Combat Patch" (your words) they probably deployed with the SF unit.
Calling them POGs might be unwise.

SPC Elijah J. Henry, MBA - I was a Ranger first then went to Ranger School 7 years later. The thing is many soldiers used to be assigned to ranger companys (Korea, Vietnam etc) so when the unit went to war they were authorized to wear a Ranger tab above the combat patch afterwards since they 'earned' their tab in action.
A lot of people don't realize that there were Ranger Companys before the present day Ranger Battalions were existing, but Ranger School opened for training in Sept 1950 at Fort Benning Georgia. Seventeen Airborne Companies were selected to become Ranger Companies.
Later during after 1965 and continuing till the Ranger Bats were organized, the Army's Individual Replacement System (Army IRS) fed soldiers into Ranger Companys many times regardless if the individual was ranger trained and sometimes without even Airborne since Combat Jumps were not expected into the Jungle.
In my case I was a machinegunner on the M60s and Ma-Deuce. I was assigned not because of Ranger School but because I knew how to keep MGs singing their song.
By-the-by, the army currently uses a mostly Unit replacement system for deploying to combat areas but they used to feed soldiers one at a time into existing formations.

SFC Ralph E Kelley - support personnel attached or assigned to Group who are neither 11 series nor 18 series are what I would still refer to as POGs. There are Ranger POGs, too, but that one seems jarring to me.

I certainly knew about the Ranger Companies in Korea, etc, and I recall reading that all Rangers from before Ranger School was established were retroactively awarded the Ranger Tab, but I had never heard of "earning the Tab" in combat and therefore wearing it on the right shoulder. I find this fascinating. Thanks for sharing!
