No, the uic's are different. I was on a rear detachment when my unit deployed. If they were to get a unit citation the orders were usually say the unit forward.
Below is from the HRC Awards FAQ page.
Q8: For a Soldier to receive a Meritorious Unit Commendation (MUC) as a permanent award, did the Soldier have to have served in theater with the unit or could he have served in the rear detachment?
A8: The Soldier must be deployed to the area of operations where the MUC was awarded. Please refer to Table 29-1, AR 670-1 for criteria on wear of unit awards.

The proof of unit award is usually the deployment order that put you with that unit in that country in the time frame of the unit award.
From HRC:
"A unit award is awarded to a designated unit and is worn by members of that unit who participated in the cited action. Personnel who did not participate in the cited action, but who are assigned to the cited unit, are authorized temporary wear of the unit award while assigned."

Read the regs. If the unit is awarded say the MUC, then everyone assigned to that unit forever will wear the MUC. Now if you were in the Unit when it earned the MUC, it is like a personal award and you can wear it till you die.

I don’t know if they differentiate when a unit award is given. If you’re a member of a unit when the award is given it’s a permanent award to all members of the unit. If you joint a unit after it was awarded you can wear it while in the unit. I’m sure someone will correct me if I’m wrong. If you’re discharged already you should be able to get a copy of the citation, your orders showing you were a unit member at the time, and request a DD Form 215 (amendment to the 214).

I have two permanent unit awards on mine as well. One was on my 214 and one, awarded after I ETSd was on my 215. I’m assuming the citation was awarded for a period he was in the unit but issued after his discharge. CPT (Join to see)

SFC (Join to see) - It can take a year to get the paper work back for a unit citation. They will usually just do a memo for the units that were awarded. It can also be looked up at the HRC page. You could get it added to your 214 with a 215 but then it would take some work.

Yeah. It was about 6 months when my 215 showed up but my old unit did the leg work for me. When I was recruiting I requested a couple for PSMs who I was helping out. If you’re reenlisting, it’s pretty easy. A copy of the citation to the PAC section and a little research on their pet and it’s done. If you’re out and not coming back in they had me send I a copy of the citation and proof the PSM was in the unit at the time. I had one 215 take almost 2 years for one of them. CPT (Join to see)
