Someone said you can't wear them because they don't have Vibram soles. Can anyone else verify this?

I follow that too. It's never a good idea to listen to the barracks lawyer

Any deviation from issued gear must be approved by your COC, our experiences do not matter in this case. Thank you for your service.

Just to clarify, I'm not asking if the boots are unauthorized to wear on post. As far as I can tell, they're AR-670-1 approved. I just was told they weren't allowed to be worn for a combat deployment. I know they're at least okay to wear on post in my company considering that my 1SG and several other NCOs wear them

Depends on your job but there shouldn't be any reason why not unless your a maintenance field then you'll have to wear steel toes.

Thank you for actually responding and not just giving me a regulation to look up.

AR 670-1 or DA pam 670-1 ALWAYS refer to the source. Anything else is just someone spouting uneducated rumors.

Always go to the source and not your buddy that heard from somebody who heard from a drill sergeant.

I think I worded my question wrong. I know they're okay to wear, especially since I have been for almost 6 months know. I was told that I wouldn't be able to wear them if deployed to a combat zone because they don't have the right type of sole.

Well there's a difference between regulation and local policy. If you're commander has deemed them unacceptable he can specify so in writing.

Also, it will be specified in writing somewhere, whether or not they're authorized for X place or school or whatever

Those boots are compliant. Only a CMD decision would go beyond the regs, so you simply need to ask your NCO. I deployed with them, but in winter was surely glad to have those gortex boots issued via ADO.

Start with the governing uniform regulations, then proceed to your unit SOP. My advice? Don't do anything outside the box you don't have the paper on. CSM said it best-our "experiences" aren't guidance.
