Can my unit legally request a picture of my civilian drivers license?

My unit is doing some dumb drivers questionnaires and they’re making everyone take a picture of the front and back of their civilian drivers license and give it to them. I’m not comfortable with doing this and I’m almost positive that this is illegal. I can find a regulation about it

Being a 13F I'm gonna assume you have a SECRET clearance, so what information are you worried about the gov having that they don't already? Remember your SF86 and DD form 4 when you enlisted?

I didn’t really think about that. There are some pretty shady people in my unit and that’s more what I was concerned about

SPC (Join to see) those shady people already have access to your social security number, date of birth, home of record and anything else they would need to steal your identity.

BLUF: YES, that is if you want a Military Driver's License
Per AR 600-55, Page 4, Dated: 17 September 2019
2–2. Army Servicemembers
The following minimum licensing requirements apply to military operators of AMVs:
a. Driving off the installation. Within the United States or U.S. possessions, operators must have—
(1) A valid OF 346 or DA Form 5984–E. However, commanders have the option to waive the OF 346 or DA Form 5984–E requirement for Army Servicemembers to operate non-tactical administrative DOD motor vehicles with a gross vehicle weight less than 10,000 pounds (see para 2–6 for waiver requirements and situations when the waiver of an OF 346 or DA Form 5984–E is prohibited).
(2) A valid civilian driver’s license issued by a State (not necessarily the State in which the activity is located), the District of Columbia, or a U.S. possession (Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, or Guam).
Per AR 600-55, Page 60, Dated: 17 September 2019
Appendix L
The Army Driver and Operator’s Training Packet Requirements
L–1. Operator’s training packet
Each operator of Army equipment is required to have a personnel training folder that contains copies of training records and certifications received within current organization. All records must be stored in accordance with AR 25–400–2. The following list contains all required documents:
a. Completed commander’s interview from current organization.
b. Photocopy of civilian driver’s license.

If that doesn't answer the question up and down, left, right and center, I don't know what does sir! One can never go wrong with regulatory guidance.

Depends on the state, in NC it is illegal to photocopy a DL unless the copier has a letter from the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles. Not hard to get if you have valid reasoning for copying the DL.

The Army wants to know who has valid driver's licenses. This information is put into GCSS_Army. Almost positive it's illegal? Have you confirmed this with JAG? If you haven't, then what is your basis? If you're that concerned, address this with your Master Driver, your Motor Sergeant, your Squad Leader and your Training/Readiness NCO.

They tried to do this before and it was shot down by the brigade I believe. I will ask the master driver thank you.

This seems like a pointless issue to fight. If you are driving onbase and own a vehicle the command has the requirement to verify you are in compliance. There has always been a safe driving initiative in the military focused to first term Service members as they are the most likely to get into an incident or accident. In the Marine Corps there is always a major vehicle/driving checklist process before a major holiday or leave block to ensure everyone has serviceable vehicles and all of their paperwork is current. You could possibly fight it but they could also go the route of removing your onbase driving privileges.
The problem is that they have the high ground on this and you have no supporting documentation in your favor. Unless you enjoy stirring up crap I would just let them get their pictures

When I was an E4 we literally wrote our SSN down on every piece of paper we ever filled out and would shout it across the dinning facility to the headcount.
So we are improving on PII.

When I came in my official "snail mail" **address in Basic Training contained my SSN!
I kind of cringe when I walk into Army/Navy aka Military Surplus Stores and see duffle bags with SSNs on them.
**I included the snail mail part because from what I hear these days the new Soldiers get smart phones and most likely email.

Illegal my 4th POC, you failed being a barracks lawyer. 1. Every Post has a requirement to have a valid state DL to drive any POV on Post. 2. Most Mil DL require having a state DL prior to issue, 3. Its a record, which they track. 4. You can be required to have and show proof of insurance for any POV you have on Post.

Thank god this is old. They have every other document and important date I. The world, far more significant than a license. Yes they can. In fact they can check you at the gate, they can check during a welfare check, and the Commander can withhold it for certain reasons.

It is not illegal. It is required. There has to be a front and back copy with the "dumb drivers questionnaires" as you call it which most of us know as the Commanders survey. These documents along with the test you will take about each vehicle will be maintained in a binder. Your Military license will expire at the same time as your civilian.
