Can someone remind me of the difference between the GWOT Service and the GWOT Expeditionary Medals?

The GWOT EM or Expetitionary Medal was awarded to those who deployed to a combat zone for more than 30days. It was replaced with the Iraq Campaign Medal. Those-such as myself-who we’re awarded the GWOT EM were given the option of keeping the GWOT EM or “trading” for the Iraq Campaign Medal. I kept the GWOT EM as one of the first units deployed to Iraq in 2003.

So if you were, for example, in CONUS on 9/11, and deployed to the AO sometime after, would you be eligible for both awards? I’m asking because I got out before receiving either.

Yes, everyone on active duty got the GWOTS for service between 911 and the date the GWOTS was established. For an AOR tour you got GWOTE, Iraq campaign, or Afghan campaign but only one of those for the same period.

Short answer is yes. On your AOR tour you get GWOTE if you dont get the Afghan or Iraq campaign medal (or the new ones they have now).
