Can you add to the list of a Leader’s A-Z of Body Language?

Great article and great list on non-verbal body language. The best leaders are avid readers, and I am not only talking about books. They are masters at reading the non-verbal clues that we share.

RP members can you add more to the list and how important is it for you as leader to understand what message your body language is sending?

COL Mikel J. Burroughs this is a great list. I think I could make two or three more using the same format and never use the same word twice. I was hoping the punctuation marks were going to have qualities attached as well but unfortunately not this time around.

I think the values of nonverbal communication are often over looked, and this can make or break you as a leader, mentor, or friend. For example, something as simple as being a good listener is often times messed up. You can be hanging on every word, but if you present a defensive posture, ridged, arms crossed, or continuously fidgeting do you think anyone will perceive you as actually listening? The answer is no, being mindful of our posture, motions, and appearance is vital to properly communicate a convey non-verbal messages.

No I can't list the A-Z of Body Language in this nation. I do know that body language varies around the world but looks of horror and love are pretty consistent. Various cultures consider distance between people very differently. In our own culture, personal space is important while in some cultures closeness even between strangers is appropriate.

LTC Stephen F. Very nice - well put. It would be nice to have a world guide on body language because you are absolutely correct!

COL Mikel J. Burroughs I've read several books on nonverbal communication and this article touches on all the things I can think of from them but not with the same depth as in the books. Another aspect of learning about someone is through their handwriting. It's not only important that you learn things to recognize ,but also it's interesting what one learns about themselves from this information.

CPT (Join to see) Great point and observation on the hand writing aspect. I know this list isn't comprehensive, but what a nice short precise way of presenting it and having it as a "quick reference" reminder. Very good for young leaders to be able to read the body language of their superiors when going into a conference or meeting! Check!

Body language plays a large roll in not only how your message is received but how it is delivered as well. I think we as leaders need to be aware of not only the body language of those around us but our own as well. Sometimes we can have the most important message to give but is lost in the way we communicate with our body language.

Great find COL Mikel J. Burroughs!

SGT Ben Keen I couldn't agree more and it was a great find. This is an area of leadership we haven't covered before. The way you carry yourself as a leader is critical in the business we are in while serving in the military and it will follow you right into the civilian world. Great list to be aware of!
