I'm the national guard once you sign the contract you're in the service. He'll get a general discharge and have to say "I almost joined once" basic training is only 10 weeks and ait is a little longer. Tell him to buck up and get the job done he signed up for.

You would think if he is going to college he would want the NG, they pay for in state tuition in most states etc.

We didn't get the correct answer here. Lot of people suggest call the recruiter. He is not wasting recuiter times, recruiters got paid to do his/her job. Send letter to command recuiter.

So he is basically a quitter! NG often pays some tuition assistance- so that will be gone. It will keep him from rejoin a nservice w/o a waiver and those occasionally disappear completely. It could hurt him with some employers (particularly those with vets in HR or management). WTF can't he just suck it up and transfer to a unit closer to college?

SFC (Join to see) - if he bails now, does he also get a RE Code of 3 which will require a waiver if he changes his mind in the future about joining a branch...any branch?
The sister services are less helpful with RE Code Waivers from what I have seen on RP.
Sgt Randolph Gulley Jr what SFC (Join to see) hasn't told you yet is one of the most asked questions on RP is "prior service but want to enlist again. Have a RE Code of 3 <insert long drawn out story, but really want to get back in> How do I get a waiver and reenlist?" Among this group of questions are large portion of people who did not ship to IET and have an RE3 and can't get back in now that they have reconsidered their position.
Put RE Code in the search box and you can see the topic page, which links you to all the conversations with it as a topic tag.
Soldiers transfer states fairly regularly, especially because of college or new jobs.

LTC Jason Mackay oh for sure. If he bails he definitely gets a general discharge, or if he's lucky just an uncharacterized one. Definitely an RE3 code. But if he wants to switch after AIT that's pretty simple. He'll just have to repay any bonus he took

Transferring to another states National Guard is pretty easy and very commonly done. My advice would be to do BCT and AIT, or the BCT phase if he is split option and then find a unit near were he wants to go and see if he can get transferred to it. That will depend on his MOS and if there are slots, but in my experience Guard units are very pro-active about finding you a home.
I would also remind him of the benefits of staying in the Guard. After he is MOS qualified, he is eligible for GI Bill, he gets paid for drill and most states offer educational benefits to enlisted soldiers.
