Running
If you can do 1 mile, what about 3 miles? How many more can you do? I think it is our duty to stay in shape, just in case we are needed again? What is the minimum to be considered in shape? Five miles without dying or more? Agree

I run a 5 miler every Wednesday in a little under 35 minutes.

Yes; can't ask my Airmen to perform the PT test, if I can't do it myself!

As far as how much- it greatly varies, based on how often I get out. I tell my people my fitness goal is to be in good enough shape to be able to take the annual test any day of the year and not have to worry about it.

I think a run a few times a week isn't excessive and is very realistic. Set high expectations of your troops and they will rarely let you down.

I can do it, only because I have to be able to do it. TXSG Commander's Small Unit Challenge is coming up in a few months and my RGT is going for a 3rd win in a row.

I absolutely hate running though, no God given cartilage in my knees and I am a heavy runner (no sneaking up on anyone for me). I suck at breathing and get that dang pinch almost every time. Just give me extra push ups and I'm good.

Glucosamine for those aching knees...take regularly until you decide if you need surgery. It's one of the few supplements that has been shown to heal cartilage.

I'll try it, I've had surgery on both and now get Euflexa injections when the pain becomes too much.

Glucosamine isn't something you 'try', it's something you take...correction. on my part. If you have arthritis or DD or DJD, which anyone over 30 has...we should be taking Glucosamine everyday. It internally lubricates the joints that have cartilage...aids in their recovery. Don't buy the cheap shit feom grocery store for 1.99. Get pharmaceutical grade glucosamine. Maybe you'll thank me later, maybe it will give you subtle relief, but it will help you heal.

I can run 5 miles right now this minute...not fast or breaking any speed records. However, I still be able to fight at the end of this run too.

I opine that the key to warrior fitness is injury prevention and the ability to exert yourself cardio-wise and still have enough "umpf" to hold your own in a fight at the end of all that.

I regularly run and perform CrossFit. It's not uncommon for me to be seen running with a weight vest on.

I support the concept of not just running, but being able to fight at anytime if called to. Training under stress in a dynamic setting is something most of us don't practice enough of vs. training/fighting in a static/sterile environment.

A lot of good comes out of CrossFit, but a lot of injuries come out as well. Probably more than any other fitness program I have seen. Care to comment on your theory of why this is? @2LT Chris Loomis

CrossFit is an issue. we see more injuries from that in the ER than ever before. Also, there needs to be proper nutrition support and supplement support along with the exercise. That component is usually left out or misguided.

I'm like John Candy in Stripes. I figure why pay for a fancy fat camp I'll just go to boot camp. If I tried to run a mile right now I'd look like he did during the whole obstacle course scene. Or worse the mud wrestling scene!

Never really been a good runner though. Even in peak condition I would struggle to run very fast. The rest was no big deal but the run never was my forte.

So, while in the Navy served on a ship that was 505' Long. Always got a kick out of needing to run 1.5 miles. I could do it sub 10min, but consider, after 505' where am I going to go? My great run times never really helped my terrible swimming skills.

Totally agree that cardio health needs to be better, but strength is probably of greater importance. Might be able to run like the wind, but dragging my fellow airmen after being shot might be a little on the tough side.

Not sure. I am guessing the answer is no. If my ankles would hold up, I could get back there pretty quickly. Since it wont hold up, " a walking I will go, a walking I will go....."
