If you can do 1 mile, what about 3 miles? How many more can you do? I think it is our duty to stay in shape, just in case we are needed again? What is the minimum to be considered in shape? Five miles without dying or more? Agree

Minimum to be considered in shape as a service member in general? Capable of scoring 1st class on your Physical Fitness Test.

One of my most inspiring mentors once told me "You may not be the fastest, and you may not be the strongest, but you damn well better be the toughest. You will run as long as the fastest, you will work as long as the strongest. You. Will. Never. Quit."

With that in mind, as a Marine Officer how far do you have to be able to keep going, right now, without stopping or dying? As far as it takes.

SSG(P) (Join to see) All my bravado aside, I'm not a terribly strong runner. I haven't run a half marathon or even a 10k in years, I meant it more as a comment on mental toughness and refusing to quit.

Capt Richard I P. Have to agree with you about running a 1st Class PFT - and knowing I probably will never accomplish it. Max the pushups? About 45secs. Sit-ups take a few minutes longer. Best APFT run 2 years ago. Don't remember the time but scored a 287. Those last 13 points seem forever away... Semper Fi.

Great question, SSG. Just walked in the door from running 5. Impressive bio, brother. Force Recon, RS, Diver and Chiropractic on top of that. As I said in another post, IMHO I'm not a good runner but I still love to run. Distance isn't an issue as I don't move very fast but 5 miles or 15... It's all the same. Problem is I get bored. Have to agree, running isn't a great work out but it does make me feel better. Add another hour in the gym and I'm GTG. I enjoy Insanity... That's a work out.

Semper Fi.

I hate running, but have to hold the standard. Was mad at myself when I did 5 miles in 43:16. The last mile was the killer.

I could, but that's not enough. I used to be a competitive runner and would prefer to get back into competing.

Granted, it's 25 years later, but I still remember the pace...just need to get the body to catch up.

I used to run a 5:30 mile, but I've been out for 13 years and was Navy before that (on Submarines). I only ran twice a year back then and am regretting it now (and it was only 1.5 mi for the Navy PRT).

Reading through some of these comments have been helpful and motivating. I'm looking to be back "in fighting shape" within about 9 months trying to get back in. A change in diet will be a start, but I HAVE to get back into running... Never had a problem with push ups or sit ups, but that run has always kicked my ass, lol...

Yeah - not running 3 miles in 2014 - maybe 1/2 mile if the wife is chasing me.
