For those of you that have transitioned out of the military, do you still do anything to stay in shape and....can you still pass the PT test? Personally, I'm in better shape now than I ever was in the military but, I'm also a bit wiser with my nutrition, supplementation, and choices in life. What about you?

I'm actually in better shape now, five years post retirement than I ever was in my 20 year tenure.
I'm in the gym 3/wk. I've done two rounds of P90X, and participate in fund raising running events. The latest was the Spartan Race here in San Francisco.

Very good and I will do it again. The SF one was at the AT&T park so no mud. Lots of stairs and heavy lifting. Challenging none the less.

it's one of the toughest ones. I was at the one in WA where the twins completed the Sprint 7 times. I have down a few of them. TM, Spartan, WD, don't care for just the runs. training to get my Trifecta Badge

We're special up here in NorCal. The Spartan races are hard to come by. I may do the next one in Sac in Oct.

It depends on what you call "in Shape". In my opinion.....round is a shape!

Yes I can.  Might struggle on the sit ups a little bit, but I have run two marathons and completed a couple century length bike rides.

Can you still pass the PT test? Can you max it?

Having obtained Personal Trainer and USA Weightlifting Sports Performance Coach Level 1 certifications after I retired, I would say I could come close to maxing the APFT. However, I would not subject myself to such an outdated means of measuring my physical fitness. I regularly workout (CrossFit, HIIT, Tabata, TRX, Olympic Lifts, etc.) and feel much healthier than I ever did during my 25 years in uniform. Of course, it helps that I have nothing to do all day but workout. haha

I totally agree with you Mike, any physical training I have done outside of the Army's APFT/PRT programs have always put me in better shape to pass my fitness test. I never even started maxing my APFT until I took up boxing. Now my knees are so messed up after some rough years in Fort Riley running on the rock infested tank trails it's hard to keep my run up and play basketball like I use to. Just getting back into power lifting and I actually will meet the crew at the gym this afternoon for a game of basketball, even though my knees hurt you know we are hard headed. I don't like the knew PRT but I guess it is ok for the new Soldiers in order for them to save wear and tear on their bodies but I don't think they could have maintained our standard of 300 on an APFT solely on PRT, but I guess it's possible to reach and maintain the new lowered standard of 270. Great to hear from you Mike, keep in touch.

Well yes, but then I need to pass it. I have struggled my way out of the Excellent into Outstanding on my last PRT. My new goal is to Max it out - with training at almost 6000 feet, I have a reasonable shot of maxing my next two tests (this Fall and next Spring when I return to sea-level).

If there is a catagory for age 60, YES, I'll pass it and max it. I was 42 when I retired and maxed the APFT to the end. The only way I would be able to do it today is if there was an AGE 60 catagory. Recovery time from any exercise is longer, muscle fatigue does come sooner! But as long as I can get on the racquetball court and win some games...I'm good. That's where I'm heading now as soon as I hit "respond"!
