I began watching lots of Japanese television programming while stationed in Hawaii. There were no subtitles, so a group of us would sit in the day room at the BOQ making up dialog. It was a hoot. Then they began adding subtitles and we discovered that we weren't that far off. However, seriously, I've watched some of my favorite movies in foreign language with subtitles without any great difficulty. Enjoyed them immensely.

On a slightly different note, one of my suppliers had a Chinese crew that watched Chinese programming during lunch breaks and I was surprised to find subtitles even though the actors were speaking Chinese. When I asked, they told me "the actors speak terrible Chinese". Actually, the problem is that there are so many dialects/variations of Chinese, that few understand them all. Indians overcome this by having everyone speak a national language (Hindi) as well as their "native language". Interesting, yes?

I remember watching a movie and guys did exactly that with a movie. The dialects part doesn't surprise me one bit. Before deciding to learn Mandarin, I quickly realized there were over a dozen well known of dialects used in China. The Philippines is the same way.

SGT (Join to see) - Interesting. I wasn't aware of the language differences in the Philippines. Although, given the geography of the island nation, it's easy to imagine how groups may have developed unique identities and languages there.

It is a good way to watch a known film dubbed in a foreign language.

I watch everything with subtitles turned on anyway so watching english subtitled foreign films is a non-issue for me. There are some great movies out there that were just never dubbed in english.
