I’m in the national guard, currently in the process of changing my MOS and moving to active duty. I want to do intel work, but also shoot and do “cool guy” things. Looking into 35L, 35M, and 13F. Want to know if these MOS’s or any others would help me do this. My line scores are all above 110 and my ACFT is above 550. Which route should I take

Wanna do "cool guy stuff?" Then you should go Infantry or Combat Engineer with the Rangers and then try out for SF.

If you want to do "Cool Guy" stuff go 18X and let the cards fall... or if you don't want to try that route, do a combat MOS, or Ranger... I get to do "Cool Guy" stuff all the time as a 12B. Nothing cooler than making something turn to dust with a perfectly calculated charge... letting that freedom ring!

Every problem can be solved with the proper application of explosives. ESSAYONS!!!!

13F would be Fires which works with intel during exercises, but they aren't focused on intel. Anything 35 series is going to be intel.

Counterintel is more identifying vulnerabilities and threats - like if you see something, say something CI are the people who respond to those reports.

I haven't worked with many HUMINT collectors.

Anything 35 series you have to have TS with SCI eligibility. You can reclass with an open investigation and interim SCI but you still have to have started the process for TS if you don't have one already.

What's "cool guy" stuff?

Buddy of mine works in intel for an SF group. “Cool guy stuff” has been defined as things like going outside the wire, being on target, clandestine work

SPC Eian Patrick - You're not always going to get into an SF group as intel. I've been intel for 18 years and never been in an SF unit. Have I done some interesting things? Sure. But most people don't end up in a SF unit or do those things you're thinking are "cool guy" stuff.

SPC Eian Patrick your buddy is probably lying to you. The Intel group works in the SCIF in an SFG unless they are on the SOT-A. 35F aren't on the SOT-A. 35L were removed from SFG years ago. 13F are only about one per battalion in an SFG and only at the E7 level as targeting NCOs.

The "cool guy stuff" any support puke does in USASOC is about one term, three years, before they go back to the normal Army. Some people do two tours, about six years, but by then they get kicked out of the Army because they fail at being an actual NCO at that point.

Bottom line, if you want to stay in USASOC as MI you will work in a SCIF doing Intel work unless you join Ranger Regiment. Even then, you'll still work in a SCIF, you'll just get to go to the range more than other MI people in your field.

You will never be a door kicker as MI. Seriously. You will never be a door kicker or an Operator as MI, and if you try to pretend like you are, you'll just end up the butt of jokes of your peers. MI are not shooters. I was a Cook in Ranger Regiment and did more shooting and fast roping than our MI guys.

So, decide if you want to kick doors or be support. There's no such MOS as SOF Support. If you are support, your career field will not be in SOF for your entire term. Or, you can choose a SOF MOS and kick doors. If you want to kick doors, Ranger Regiment is always taking applicants. FYI, SF, CA, and PSYOPS are not door kickers, so don't go to their selections hoping to be a bad ass door kicker / shooter in the face of people.
